Sukkot/Shmini Atzeret/Simchat Torah 2012

We will be in Tel Aviv from October 6 to October 10. I believe that October 6 is Shabbat. Will there be any problem finding restaurants in Tel Aviv that evening? When are Shmini Atzeret and Simchat Torah celebrated please? Will everything in Tel Aviv be closed then? Are there festivities we could watch or participate in?

Tel Aviv is an almost militantly secular city. Restaurants will be open every day during Sukkot and Simchat Torah (unless they are kosher - and very few are).

October 6 is Shabbat; October 8 is Shemini Atzeret & Simhat Tora (clebrated on the same day in Israel, i.e only 1 day holiday).

80% of the restaurants in Tel-Aviv are open on Fridays and holidays (the non-kosher ones).

Any that is closed on a Saturday will be closed on a holiday. What are you referring to specifically.

Every synagogue will have "hakafot" that guests can attend.

In Israel Shmini Atzeret and Simchat Torah are celebrated on the same day - so this year the holiday begins the evening of Sunday Oct. 7 and continues on Monday Oct 8 - at nightfall the holiday season will be over.

Festivities and celebrations are part of synagogue services both Sunday evening and Monday morning. You would be welcome to come to any synagogue that you like.

Kosher restaurants will be closed, but there will be plenty of non-kosher restaurants open, and many other places - but not shops and businesses - will be open as well.

Shemini Atzeret and Simhat Torah are both celebrated on the same day in Israel: the evening of October 7 and on October 8. What's closed and what's open will be like a Shabbat.

What kind of festivities? There will be dancing in synagogues after religious services on the Sunday evening and Monday morning, and then after dark on Monday October 8 there will be public celebrations with dancing and music in one of the main squares - no doubt someone who knows Tel Aviv better than I do will be able to tell you exactly where and when.

Wow! Three of us saying the same thing simultaneously...
