Memorial Day

A heads up to anyone in Israel right now. Tomorrow is Israel's Memorial Day - the observance begins tonight (Sunday) at sundown.

What this means is that there will not be any restaurants or places of entertainment open tonight - if you are here you need to make prior arrangements for supper - get take out, buy food ahead of time or arrange for a meal at your hotel.

Tomorrow will be a very somber day in Israel - there is a 2 minute siren at 11 am during which time virtually everything will stop for 2 minutes of silence. People will stop walking, talking, pull their cars over and stand at attention next to them, etc.

Tomorrow night at sundown Memorial Day ends and there will be a 180 degree turnabout as we celebrate Israel's 65th Independence Day.

To our Israeli friends, we join you in remembering and honoring the sacrifice of Israel's war dead as well as victims of terror attacks.

May their memories always be for a blessing.

Amen to that, Douglas.

For anyone in Israel now: all the radio and tv programs will focus exclusively on stories relating to fallen soldiers. It is all very moving, but the station I've got used to having on in the background as I work on memorial day is Channel 33 (a free station that should be available on any tv you have access to).

From this evening through to the tomorrow night it screens a constant series of identical slides bearing the name, age and date of death of all those who fell. Even if you don't know any Hebrew you would definitely get the message. It's absolutely chilling, particularly when you see days on which many tens of very young people died.

Douglas, thank you for your kind words.

Just to add, Channel 33 is a national network, part of the 6 national networks in Israel. (Ch 1, Ch 2, Ch 10, Ch 33, Knesset channel and Educational channel)
