Planning Israel/Europe May 2014: Air Options?

Beginning to plan 4-week mid-May 2014 vacation, to start with 8-12 days in Israel to be followed by 1 or 2 other "visits" (ocean or river cruise, visit to Florence or Brugge, etc.). Could use United points for nonstop air to Europe from Houston Texas (? Barcelona, Rome, etc.). Relative merits of various European airports for connection to Ben Gurion International?

If you want to visit Italy then Rome of Milan are the suitable airports. There are several flights a day to TLV from both. As for visiting - been to Brugge and Florence, liked both but Florence surpasses all. Brugge is a one, maximum two day destination.

You can fly to TLV (Ben Gurion airport) from almost any major airport in Europe.

There are many Star Alliance airlines flying to TLV: Brussels Airlines, Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airlines, Swiss...

If you stat your trip in Tel Aviv and you have United points, why would you choose a non stop flight to Europe rather than flying from Huston - NYC - Tel Aviv with United?

Checked United points for Israel, probably not doable. Easily can do Houston direct to major European airport and even then open jaws (return from another, like fly to Rome etc. from Houston/return Houston from ex: Amsterdam) once we narrow down our other potential travel element(s), like ocean or river cruise. Any sense which airports provide most competitive rates for flights to Tel Aviv (multiple competitive carriers)?

United is partnered with Lufthansa, which flies to Israel from Germany. Maybe you could use points that way?

There are non-stop flights on various airlines from most European capitols and a few other major cities.

Well, EasyJet flies from Basel, Geneva in Switzerland and Luton, Manchester in the UK in very competitve rates. JET2 (Manchester UK), JetAirFly (Belgium), Air Baltic (through Riga) have also very good rates.
