Israel ~ Petra ~ Eylat -- please help- my dad is asking

Hello All,

My dad doesn't know how to use this site and is asking me to post the question below- Please help!

Questions on Israel

From Tel Aviv could we set a driver/tour to Eylat, [how far?], thru the Negev desert , stop for a visit at Petra in Jordan and continue on to Eylat for a stay for a few days?

or

could we drive to Eylat, thru the Negev desert, then do a day trip from there to Petra?

How long is the drive from Tel Aviv to Eylat?

What would be best way to do this,,,,We'd like to leave Tel Aviv, spend time in Eylat, see Petra, Negev desert, and eventually return to Tel Aviv for a flight home to NY ?

YOu can easily drive or fly to Eilat. You can also take a bus. There are many tours that go from Eilat to Petra. Desert Eco Tours is highly recommended by a number of people. Is your Dad looking to rent a car or is he looking for a driving tour guide? A regular taxi will NOT take him from site to site.He would have to tell the driver EXACTLY where he wanted to go and what he wanted to see. A driving tour guide--although more expensive would work with you/him to plan a trip from Tel Aviv to Eilat, making whatever stops the two of them felt was appropriate.

You don't stop for a visit in Petra when you go through the Negev desert. Petra is in Jordan and will require a border crossing. You can't drive across the border here in a rental car or have someone drive you across, it is a pedestrian crossing and you have to make arrangements for transportation in Jordan on the Jordanian side.

The way to do this is to fly/take a bus to Eilat. It takes less than an hour to fly and about 5 hours by bus. From Eilat, you hire an Israeli company who offers tours to Petra. They are usually all inclusive one or 2 day trips which pick you up from your hotel in Eilat early in the morning, facilitate your border crossing and have Jordanian drivers and guides on the other side waiting. You pay the Israeli company for all the services. After touring in Petra, you will be brought back to the border, escorted through passport control and met on the Israeli side by the company who will return you to the hotel. These tours run everyday.

I would then suggest you rent a car in Eilat and drive back through the Negev passing through Timna and Mizpeh Ramon to get a Negev experience. You can then return to Tel Aviv.

I just returned from visiting Petra for the first time.

Your father can drive from the Mizpe Ramon area or fly to Eilat from Tel Aviv. He could also tour that area with Adam Sela, as I just did (see www.adamsela.com); he and his son run a wonderful touring company.

From Eilat to Petra, I strongly recommend that your father use Desert Eco Tours, previously mentioned, out of Eilat. Having just used them for the first time, I can tell you that the positive reviews are well-earned. This is a top-flight, professional organization. I recommend the two-day tour, with a day touring Petra and a second day of off-road jeeping through Wadi Rum, spending the night in Jordan. I stayed in Taybet Zeman, a wonderful, former Bedouin village with very comfortable, modern accommodations, but there are a range of options, from sleeping in Bedouin tents to the very Western Movenpick Hotel.

This all will take several days, but it is a wonderful area and experience.

Google what? This forum exists to provide helpful information and answers to those who pose questions, not pointless critiques.

The drive from Tel Aviv to Eilat is about 4.5 hours abd can be done alone (although it may get boring) stopping at various sites along the way. There is a drop off charge for rental cars of less than three days. From here you can arrange a tour to Jordan/Petra through one of the companies in Eilat such as Thru-us or Ahalan Olympus. Then drive back north or take this trip at the end of the Israel visit and fly back directly to Ben Gurion Airport in time for the flight back home.
