Feedback on 3 week travel itinerary

Hi all,

I'm putting together an itinerary for my father and I for an upcoming trip to Israel.

We're mostly interested in the natural, historical and cultural beauty of the country.

We plan to hire a car and travel around, and then spend time in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv only using public transport.

*You'll see that there's a few 'unsures'. Originally we planned to drop over to Egypt for a few days but we've since changed our mind.. So if we've missed anything, or in a certain location too briefly, please let me know.

Sunday 29th June 2014: land in Tel Aviv at 0700, get hire car and drive to Haifa.

Mon 30th: Haifa

Tue 1st July: Haifa

Wed 2: TIberias

Thur 3: Tiberias

Fri 4: Tiberias

Sat 5: Ein Gedi

Sun 6: Eilat

Mon 7: Jordan (Petra and wadi rum tour)

Tue 8: Eilat

Wed 9: ?unsure*

Thur 10: ?unsure* Jerusalem

Fri 11: Jerusalem (get rid of hire car)

Sat 12: Jerusalem

Sun 13: Jerusalem

Mon 14: Jerusalem

Tue 15: Tel Aviv

Wed 16: Tel aviv

Thur 17: fly out of Tel Aviv at 2200

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Wed. 9th. Why not go to Mitzpe Ramon and do a jeep tour of the crater. Adam Sela who sometimes posts here is supposed to be excellent. http://www.adamsela.com

(I am sure, having posted this, you will get those who have done a jeep tour with him tell you about it.)

There are historical sites between there and Jerusalem (not on a direct route, but check a map). Eg Mamshit , Avdat, Beersheba and Arad.

Oh...you mentioned Ein Gedi but not Masada which is not far from Ein Gedi.

Qumran, where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found, is also on the same road,

If you are flying in directly from Australia you might be too tired to do a full day of driving and touring after a very long flight. Why not spend a day or two in Tel Aviv at the beginning of your tour relaxing and getting over the jet lag. It is dangerous driving when exhausted on unfamiliar roads (and on the wrong side).

Hi Heather, thanks for the replies.

I should have said that the above locations are where we'll spend the night and we'll explore neighouring locations during the day.

The current plan is to visit Masada during one of the days at Tiberias and visit Qumran whilst driving down to Ein Gedi from Tiberias.

Thanks I'll look into the Jeep tour and check out those locations you mentioned.

Below is the same list as above, but with more details (sorry I should have included this at the start)

Sunday 29th June 2014: land in Tel Aviv at 0700, get hire car and drive to Haifa, wander around jet lagged

Mon 30th: Haifa - explore city, gardens

Tue 1st July: Haifa - Acre/Akko, Carmel national park?

Wed 2: TIberias - Caesarea, Nazareth?

Thur 3: Tiberias - Sea of Galilee (drive around)

Fri 4: Tiberias - Masada

Sat 5: Ein Gedi - Dead sea swim, Qumran (on drive down here)

Sun 6: Eilat - 4X4 tour? Ramon crater?

Mon 7: Jordan - Petra

Tue 8: Eilat - Wadi rum tour

Wed: head to Jerusalem - work out specific itinerary later :-)

Thanks again!

Masada is south of Ein Gedi - nowhere near Tiberias! Also note that you can visit the archeological site of Qumran but the caves are not open to the public.

Hi mbgg, thanks for the reply.

Very true although we figured it would be easier to get into a car and head out of Tel aviv, get to Haifa and relax there. If we were to stay in Tel aviv, we'd have to either sit around until the hotel lets us in (which we expect would be 2-3pm-ish (?) or get our bags locked up somewhere and then explore jet-lagged. We plan to explore it properly at the end of the trip.

Dad should sleep well on the plane, and I work in the health field so am used to being tired. haha. Also I note on a map that it's only roughly 111kms which is quite short by Australian standards (my drive to work is 84kms) :-)

But thanks and your comments are fair. We'll be stocking up on coffee before the drive just to be safe.

How about taking a train directly from the airport to Haifa, and renting a car when you are ready to leave Haifa? You don't want or need a car in Haifa.

Interesting idea Shuffaluff, thanks! I hadn't thought about that so I might look into a train. I dare say it could be a scenic drive if it's close to the coastline.

Maybe on Mon 30th we can do without a car in Haifa and pick one up the following day for drives to Acre and/or Carmel national park

Masada is south of Ein Gedi and so it makes more sense to tour there while in the area - it is not near Tiberias at all.

The confusion arises as there is a town in the Golan called Massada - and google maps always comes up with that town when looking for the Masada national park.
