7 day Israel itinerary

My 17 year old daughter and I will be in Israel soon for a total of 7 days and 7 nights. This is her first trip to Israel and my first in several decades. What itinerary would you recommend to best utilize our time there? Shabbat will fall on the fifth night-sixth day. We are not religious but don't want to get stuck someplace on Shabbat with nothing to do/nowhere to go. Thank you very much!

For a 7-night program, you might consider:

Tel Aviv: 1 night

Galilee: 2 nights

Jerusalem: 4 nights

I suggest starting in Tel Aviv and ending in Jerusalem. For Shabbat, you'll be in Jerusalem. On Friday morning, visit Yad Vashem and then follow that with a visit to the fabulous Machane Yehuda food market - a unique Jerusalem experience, especially on Friday!

On Saturday, you can do a full day excursion to Masada and the Dead Sea.

I echo Dave's suggestion. it would be good if you can rent a car for the first three days. I would go from Tel-Aviv to Caesarea and Akko (day 1) and Sea of Galilee (day 2) down via RT#90 and R#1 to Jerusalem

David: Is Masada actually "open" to visitors on Saturdays? What sort of excursions are available on Saturdays to Masada and the Dead Sea? Private ones? Group tours? Or we could rent a car and drive there ourselves, yes? It seems that we would do best by renting a car when we arrive in Israel and driving everywhere from there, yes? Or...

Are there any group tours that you know of that might coincide with the itinerary that you suggest? (A private guide would be out of our budget.) Thanks!

Giora: IF we rent a car for the first three days then why not keep it to travel to Jerusalem too? Or if not, how do you suggest that we travel to Jerusalem and around Jerusalem? Thanks!

Puppetguy - EVERY national park is open on Saturday. Why would Masada be any different? You can tour Masada any way you wish - group tour, private tour or completely on your own.

The reason it is not recommended that you have a car in Jerusalem is parking is horrendous and driving is one big traffic jam. There is excellent public transportation, Dave does a good outline, No one would suggest a trip to Masada if it was closed that day! There is also easy, transport ( Nesher sherut) from Jerusalem to the airport.

Even if you stay in Jerusalem on the Saturday you will have no problem keeping busy: the Old City is open as usual (except for sites in the Jewish Quarter). The David's Citadel Museum, the Ramparts Walk, the Israel Museum and the Museum of Islamic Art are also open.

Israel does not simply shut down on Shabbat as you might be imagining. You say you are not 'religious' and neither are the vast majority of Israeli Jews. You'll have something in common with about 70% of our population :-) While it's true that public transportation, for the most, shuts down over Shabbat, there's plenty open and plenty to experience on the Jewish Sabbath all over Israel. In fact, Shabbat is the most popular day of the week for Israelis to tour their own country with their families.
