Credit cards

In Europe, some automated machines won't work with a credit card unless you have a card with a chip in it. Does Israel also use these chipped cards?

Not yet -- you should have no problem. But my understanding is that that system is coming, but likely to the United States as well. For now, it's still a swipe system.

Labatt is spot on. Israel uses the same credit card system that you're used to in America. Chase bank is starting to offer some "Chip & PIN" cards for those who are travelling to Europe. Just be sure to use a credit card that doesn't charge a foreign transaction fees. All US based Capital One cards do not charge this fee. Most other banks offer some cards that do not charge this fee but most US based cards do charge this. Also be sure to call your credit card company and let them know you'll be traveling to Israel so your card won't be denied for unusual use.
