Amman-Petra-Jerusalem via Allenby Bridge

Ive seen Royal Jordanian Airlines has cheap airfares this summer to Israel

Instead of going to Petra via Eilat. Can I go to Petra via Amman and then cross the Allenby Bridge to Israel and then fly home from Ben Gurion?

Yes you can. Since you are the the US you can receive a visa upon landing in Amman and you can receive a visa upon entering Israel at the Allenby Bridge. Keep in mind you cannot receive a visa to enter Jordan at the Allenby bridge. You can do this by obtaining a Visa for Jordan at the Jordanian consulate in the US. It might also be possible to enter Jordan at the Allenby Bridge using your original Jordanian visa. Post on the Jordanian forum to see if / how you can obtain a multi visit visa upon entering Amman. Also Royal Jordanian flies AMM to TLV so it might be cost effective to have the AMM - TLV leg added on to your US to Amman ticket. Also keep in mind that the Allenby Bridge crossing often has long delays as this is the main border crossing for Palestinian that want to travel.

If you plan on crossing to Israel after visiting Petra you should consider crossing at the Arava crossing which is near Eilat - from there, if you like you can fly to Tel Aviv (either Ben Gurion or Sde Dov which is a small, domestic airport)

As amm101 says, there are often long delays - up to several hours - at the Allenby Bridge, so don't plan on flying out of Ben-Gurion Airport the same day as you cross. Even though it's only a short distance in total on the map, it can take a very long time. I would suggest staying the night in Jerusalem.

If you want to cross over to Israel immediately after seeing Petra, then it is strongly recommended to do so at the Eilat-Aqaba crossing and not at the Allenby Bridge one - for the reasons stated in previous posts. The Eilat-Aqaba crossing is MUCH quicker.

I am just trying to figure out the best way to get to go to Israel with a Side trip to Petra. It seems the Arava crossing is the easiest, but Eilat is so far from the rest of the country.I remember taking the Midnight Bus from Tel Aviv to Eilat and it took like 5 hours with a stop in Dimona

Yes, it is five hours by bus to Eilat from either Tel Aviv or Jerusalem. No way around that, unless you fly! Even though it doesn't seem to make much sense geographically, it is indeed the recommended way to go, because the border crossing at Eilat/Aqaba is so much easier and quicker than at the Allenby (King Hussein) Bridge, and Petra is closer to Aqaba than to the Allenby Bridge. I don't know about public transport from the Allenby Bridge to Petra, but I suspect there isn't much.

We have already partially discussed this issue in another thread.

1. If you are coming to Israel first at Ben Gurion airport - take a connecting domestic flight to Eilat, cross at Arava border near Eilat to Petra and back after your visit.

2. If you are coming to Jordan first at Amman airport - visit Petra, then continue from Petra to Eilat/Aqaba border crossing (Arava) - cross to Israel and continue your trip in Israel.
