From Ben Gurion to Petra in one day?

Hi all,

we were wondering if it would be possible to travel straight from Ben Gurion to Petra, in one day.

Our flight will arrive in Ben Gurion at 11 am.

Any thoughts on this plan? Is it the best idea to travel to Eilat, and from there to Petra?

Thanks a lot!

Yes, take a connecting domestic flight from Ben Gurion to Eilat, airlines:

Israir - http://www.israirairlines.com/

Arkia - http://www.arkia.com

Be sure to take the flight from Ben Gurion airport (code: TLV) and not from Tel Aviv's domestic airport, Sde Dov (code: SDV).

Domestic flight depart from Ben Gurion's terminal 1. Since you are arriving in an international flight to terminal 3, take the free airport shuttle to terminal 1. The shuttle depart from exit 01 of the arrivals hall.

In Eilat - take a taxi from Eilat airport to the Arava border crossing with Jordan.

Is the bus also an option? Or is this not possible in 1 day?

The nearest bus station with a service to Eilat is at Tel Aviv's central bus station. You will need to get into Tel Aviv for that, which takes time, and then the bus ride is about 5 hours long. Taking a connecting flight (if available) will prove much useful.

And: bus tickets to Eilat should be reserved in advance.

Bus schedule to Eilat can be verified here: http://www.egged.co.il/eng

By bus you'll arrive too late and have to stay in Eilat for the night thus making it expensive even more than the flight.

The only way it is remotely possible to go from Ben-Gurion to Petra in one day is to fly.

Do you mean to go to Petra AND BACK in one day - completely impossible by bus, see my next paragraph - or just to get to Petra and then stay in Jordan for at least another day?

There seems to be a widespread belief that Petra is just a short distance from Tel Aviv, and it's an easy day trip...

By bus, you would have to get from the airport to Tel Aviv central bus station, which even if everything goes totally according to plan and you are very lucky, will take at the very least an hour and a half from the time your plane lands. It is five hours by bus to Eilat... and you would of course need to include the time waiting for the next bus to Eilat, since they don't go every two minutes!

It is impossible to visit Petra on the day you arrive. Even if you arrange a visa and cross the Allenby Bridge your traveling time would be a minimum of 4.5 hours one way if there are no crowds at the crossing and you have prior transportation arrangements. Via Eilat by plane 5 hour minimum travel if you have a great connection and 8 hours minimum of you travel by bus via Eilat. Without discussing costs and logistics you would need at least 1.5 days for such a trip and this would include coming back north when returning from the trip (Eilat option).

It is possible to get to Petra in the one day after you arrive. It would not be possible to get to Petra, tour and return to Tel Aviv in one day with an 11am arrival. The best way (which has already been mentioned several times ) is to fly down to Eilat, cross the border, get transportation on the Jordanian side to Wadi Musa (the town right at Petra) and stay the night. Wadi Musa is about 2 hours from the Jordanian border. There are many hotels in Wadi Musa. I would suggest Amra Palace if you are looking for less expensive and owned and run by Jordanians. My daughter and I loved that hotel.

The next morning you can be at the entrance to Petra as soon as it opens, spend the day and then at the end of the day, make your way back to Israel. By staying overnight, your entrance fee to Petra is hugely discounted.

You should post on the Jordanian Forum for details for travel from the Jordanian border and other hotel recommendations and logistics.

Any trip to Petra is really a 2-3 day affair from either Jerusalem or Tel Aviv. It is at least 7 hours of driving plus a border crossing from Jerusalem and you can't rent a car yourself and drive across the border so you will be reliant on other forms of transit. You should allow at least 4 hours to see Petra or you will just be kicking yourself that you got there but didn't get to see much of the site.

Hi,

thanks for all the replies!

The plan is not to visit Petra that same day, we would just like to get as fast as possible to petra, so we save an overnight in Eilat, and can visit Petra in one day.

So, to be specific:

Plane arrives at Tel Aviv thursday at 11 AM. After landing we would like to get that same day at Petra, without spening too much money.

Friday we can visit Petra, and get that same day back to Israel.

So this is possible?

Thanks again!

The first paragraph of Anmejoshme's post (no. 7) tells you!

You can do it only if there is a flight to Eilat at a suitable time, departing from Ben-Gurion Airport with enough time to allow you to transfer, and arriving in Eilat early enough to allow you to get to the border (which closes at 8 p.m.), and then there is a two-hour drive from Aqaba to Petra.

Thanks!

At what time do we have to be in Eilat to be able to get to Petra that same day?
