Serious risk of flash floods over next 2 days

As anyone in Israel will have noticed the weather has been weird over the past day or two and is getting weirder. There are already thunderstorms in Sinai and in parts of the Negev and during the night storms and rain are forecast for most parts of the country.

The official Israel Meteorological Service (ims.gov.il/IMSENG/All_Tahazit/homepage.htm) is warning of a risk of flash floods and flooding in eastern and southern wadis (dry river beds).

If you're planning tours please check the media.

Thanks for posting - you beat me to it by a bit. This means that if you were planning to head to Masada, the Dead Sea, Ein Gedi, etc. tomorrow you may find roads closed or other "inconveniences" please take these warnings seriously.

... and to prove the point, two dry river beds that cross Route 90 in the Arava - Paran/Faran and Tze'elim - have already flooded and police are advising drivers to avoid the area.

WOW, the weather is weird everywhere. One of the things I love about Israel is that in the summer you never have to think about rain! Here at home we can have weeks of grey, rainy weather during our very short summer. The water will be good for agriculture in Israel but hopefully this isn't the beginning of major changes in weather patterns.

Update - this is the weirdest weather - we've been having real "spring rains" which for Israel are non existent - thunder and lightening and rain for the past 8-10 hours and still raining.

For anyone hoping to get to Masada today - re-arrange your day - Highway 90 is now closed between Metzukei Dragot and Ein Bokek which means no access to the eastern side (cable car) of Masada, or Ein Gedi.

If you're here please check the news, check with your hotel's front desk, etc. before setting out on any trip to the desert, etc. Better to be safe - these sites will be here another day or another trip.

anmejoshme - contrary to the advice sometimes given here, rain in the first week or two of May is not unusual. I'm particularly aware of this since my daughter's birthday is at the beginning of May, and over the years we've had to cancel or replan several parties or herd a group of squealing children inside when it started raining.

PRSV - while there are occasional "light" rains in May, showers and thunderstorms (such as what we've been experiencing in the past 12 hours) are extremely uncommon. This is not what the meteorologist calls "local rain", but rather a serious heavy rain throughout the country, with flash floods in the south etc.

Just an FYI about the weather...I am on the egged 444 bus from Jerusalem to Eilat and the driver just announced road closures due to flooding that will make the trip be 6-7 hours. Ugh! However I am enjoying Egged's free Wifi

Simoneyes, be glad you're not stuck somewhere at a lonely bus stop waiting for the bus that will never come because it has been diverted, and with no way of knowing that!

Or this, from mbgg's link:
