Haifa or Acre for Touring/Stay

Currently we are booked at the Akko Hotel in Acre because of the history of the hotel as well as the area. Others are saying that we can't miss Haifa due to the gardens and views. The rest of our trip will be spent in Jerusalem, Rosh Pina, and Tel Aviv -- with side trips to Galilee; seeing the Dead Sea in Jordan as well as Petra. Please provide your thoughts on which area would be more memorable and where to lodge if you prefer Haifa. Thank you.

My wife and I stayed at the Akko Knights Youth Hostel mainly because there was so much we wanted to see in the old city of Akko we thought it would be perfect and it was for us. We spent a lot of our time in the old city of Akko and we visited Haifa as a day trip. The drive was a little stressfull as the roads were confusing but thanks to GPS we got there. We ended up parking near the lower portion of the Bahai gardens and then we took the Carmelit funicular to the top of Mount Carmel and ate lunch before walking to the upper entrance of the Bahai gardens. From there we took a taxi to the Stella Maris Monastery and rode the cable car down to the beach. We hopped on a bus back to where our car was parked.

Akkotel is a very nice small hotel. I have stayed there and loved it. As already mentioned you can visit Haifa easily as a side trip from Akko either by car or by train. There are Bahahi Gardens north of Akko (short drive or taxi) that are very different from those in Haifa and beautiful too.

Considered staying in Akko because it's such an evocative place. Decided to stay in Haifa because it's much more cosmopolitan. A pretty city, too, but bigger, more modern, with plenty to do besides the things we'd planned in advance. Six hours in Akko were enough for us. Stayed at the Bay Club Haifa Hotel, a gorgeous boutique in a somewhat quirky location.
