From Tel Aviv to Petra - how long it takes?

Hi, we are coming to Israel (Tel Aviv airport) on Monday around 11am. We would like to go to Eilat by bus and from there to Petra. Do you think that we will manage it since the borders are closing at 8pm ? Thank you very much

The bus takes over 5 hours from the Tel Aviv Central Bus Station (30 minutes from the airport). I suggest that you look for flights from Ben Gurion airport to Eilat on the Arkia and Israir web sites.

It takes five hours by bus from Tel Aviv (the central bus station, not the airport) to Eilat. It takes two hours from Aqaba to Petra. Add an hour for getting from Eilat bus station across the border and finding transport from Aqaba to Petra. Add minimum one hour for getting out of Ben-Gurion Airport and to Tel Aviv central bus station - which means taking a train to Tel Aviv Hagana station, and walking from there to the bus station. Of course it's quicker by taxi but it costs a lot more. Buses to Eilat need to be booked in advance. You can get to Aqaba that night if all goes well, but not to Petra.

Here's the breakdown: land (if your flight is on time) at 11:00. There is a train from the airport at 12:05 (you won't make the previous train at 11:35), getting to Hagana station at 12:17. Say 15 minutes to walk from the train platform to the bus platform on the 6th floor of the central bus station. You won't be in time for the 12:30 bus, and the next one is at 14:00, reaching Eilat at 19:14. Book the 14:00 bus*. You'll get across the border assuming there are no delays on the road. But you won't get to Petra that night in all probability. For details on transport from Aqaba to Petra, ask on the Jordan forum.

*Bookings can be made from two weeks to two hours before you want to travel. Online booking is possible only in Hebrew, so you'll need to do it by telephone. The number is +972 3 694 8888. If your flight is delayed so much that you miss the 14:00 bus, your tickets will be valid on a later bus but there might not be any seats available.

I doubt you would make it unless you fly down.
