Better to fly to Ben Gurion or take the bus to Jerusalem

Were taking the bus from Tel Aviv to Eilat for a couple of days, then up to Jerusalem. Would it be quicker to take the bus directly to Jerusalem or fly to the airport than shuttle to the city?

It is faster to fly even with the shuttle to Jerusalem. The shuttle will also take you to your hotel which is a bit of a bonus.

The bus is about 5 hours including a stop along the way. A flight is 30 minutes but you have to allow for check in and security plus the Nesher shuttle from the airport which can take upward of an hour to get to Jerusalem. There might not be much in it at the end of the day. They are two different experiences - the bus will give you the chance to see the country and its people but will be more of a hassle with your bags. You will need to reserve a seat in advance. The price difference is negligible. You will have more flight options and it might be more convenient for you.

The bus takes five hours. Assuming that you arrive at the bus station 30 minutes before the bus leaves and that it takes 30 min. from the Jerusalem CBS to your hotel, the total is 6 hours.

If you fly - you have to arrive at the airport 1.5 hrs in advance, flight 30 minutes, allow one hour to get luggage, shuttle to Terminal 3, wait for sherut to fill up, then one hour for sherut to your hotel. The total is 4 hours.

Flying is definitely shorter. I think mbgg's estimation is a bit exaggerated, I would say no more than 30 mintes for baggage claim (hey, it's a domestic flight, probaby less) so I would estimate it on 3.5 hours.

The Jerusalem airport - Atarot airport - used to have a flight service to/from Eilat (and Haifa) till year 2000 when it was closed down. Maybe they will reopen it one day, this will certainly shorten the time!
