Travelling from Eilat to Bethlehem and Jerusalem

I'm planning to travel from Eilat to Bethlehem and Jerusalem. Is it possible to do this by bus? Or better to hire a car? How far is it from Eilat to Bethlehem and from Bethlehem to Jerusalem. Are there checkpoints into Bethlehem?

By far the easiest way to do this is to take the bus from Eilat to Jerusalem (line 444, see http://www.egged.co.il/eng/ for schedules, you should book a ticket in advance), then another local bus to Bethlehem (leaving regularly from the bus station outside the Damascus Gate, near the light rail stop, buses leave very regularly). Yes there is a checkpoint on the way into Bethlehem (depending on which bus route you take you may not actually be stopped on the way into Bethlehem). You should have your passport and paper visa with you.

Bethlehem is right outside Jerusalem - you would need to travel from Eilat to Jerusalem and then you can take a local Arab bus from the terminal near the Damascus Gate to go to Bethlehem.

Yes, there are checkpoints into Bethlehem as it is under the Palestinian Authority - make sure to have your passport with you when you visit Bethlehem.

Bethlehem is part of the PA ( Palestinian Autonomous Zone) That is why there is a checkpoint. Also, even if you rented a car, an Israeli rental ( with the exception of a few small agencies in East Jerusalem) can not be taken into ANY PA area. ( no insurance)
