Shabat in Jerusalem or Massada?

We are planning a trip to Israel and are trying to work out our best use of time/days - is it better to go to the Dead Sea/Massada on Shabat - is this even possible with public transport - or is it better to spend Shabat in Jerusalem? Are there enough things open on Shabat like city tours/ things to see, or should we be doing our own exploration instead? Thank you.

We have decided most likely to take a rented car now instead - from all accounts Masada and Qumran are easy to get to and it might not be necessary to have a guide for this trip, correct?

That's absolutely the case, Jan. The sites are very easy to visit on your own, and Masada has a very good self-guided audio guide on top if you wish to use it.

Renting a car to tour the Dead sea and Massada is a great decision. I did just that yesterday(Saturday) and enjoyed the very scenic drive tremendously. At Massada, be sure to catch the short intro presentation before you ascend to the top. After that, like what Douglas said, you can rent an audio guide for an informative tour of the magnificent site(I'm still astounded by how King Herod and his team managed to work out the water system, construction and logistics for everything in the middle of the wilderness!)
