Travel to Jerusalem

Is December a good time of the year to visit Jerusalem? Also, would you refer any companies who organize travel and do tours in Jerusalem?

December is an excellent time. Sandeman's runs free and low-cost group tours of the city from the Jaffa Gate. There are sites such as the City of David and the Western Wall Tunnel that offer their own group tours which should be reserved in advanced. You can also tour on your own with an audio tour of some sites or with a private guide. I do not recommend Egged or Ben Harim bus tours to the city which seem to offer too many shopping opportunities rather than pure touring.

Bear in mind that Christmas is a very busy time. While Christmas isn't a holiday in Israel, it is a time when many people around the world have time off work and are able to travel, pushing up prices of accommodation. But of course that's not the whole month of December.

December is a great time to visit. You might get some cool days and some rain but also days of sunshine and warmth. It is citrus season, so lots of wonderful citrus fruits fresh from the orchards are available at that time of year.

Regarding touring. Are you looking for day tours or something different since you say 'organize travel'? Jerusalem is not a big city. You can walk or take public transit easily around the city. If you are looking for an organized tour from the USA, then that would normally be a tour to Israel which would include time in Jerusalem.

If you could be a bit more specific, and include what your particular interests are (religious, cultural, historical, arts, etc) we could help you out on this. Also, if you have dates, it would help with making suggestions.

Anytime is a good time to visit Jerusalem and we are going for the last 10 days of 2013. There is so much to see and do.

Just note December is winter and it is the rainy season. The temperatures vary and there are days when it can be cold - we have been there when it snowed. Also, the stone paving in the old city is slipery when wet.

Take an umbrella, warm jacket or raincoat and good walking shoes.
