Kalia Beach from old city Jerusalem.

Hi. We'd like to experience the dead sea and I understand that Kalia Beach is the closest spot to the old city.

I'd love to hear others experiences of this place, also any tips on how to get there.

Thank you :0)

You should experience swimming in the Dead Sea as part of visit to the area - visiting Massada, Qumran and the Ein Gedi Nature Reserve. The Sea is not that large so all of the beaches and spas are relatively close to Jerusalem. Also you cannot "swim" in the Sea for more than 10 minutes (you float on your back).

Your options are an organized tour (look at the "Egged Tours" or "Abraham Hostel" web sites), renting a car, or taking public transport.

You can stay overnight at the Sea at one of the hotels at Ein Bolek (many have spa facilities), the Guest House at Kibbutz Ein Gedi, or the Youth Hostels at Ein Gedi or Massada (private rooms and open to everyone).

From Jerusalem you could also go to Mineral Beach. There is a public bus 486 from Jerusalem that stops right at the entrance to the ticket booth at Mineral Beach and only takes about an hour, couldn't be easier. Mineral Beach is quite nice, close to the water with easy beach access into the water itself, clean change rooms and showers, as much mud as you want right at waters edge in big bins, nice chairs and seating on the beach and a snack bar. You rent a towel and locker on arrival. Be sure to bring water shoes as where ever you go to the Dead Sea, the salt at the water's edge can be sharp. Also bring bottled water with you to drink which you can refill at the beach.

Qaliya is only 30 minutes from Jerusalem. Take the light rall to the central bus station and from there any bus to Ein Boqek or Eilat. Check www.otobusim.co.il for bus number and schedule.
