May 5 and May 6 Holidays

I will be arriving in Jerusalem on May 4 and I was wondering what to expect on Israeli Veterens day and Independence Day on May 5th and 6th.

Will businesses and tourist sites be open?

Thanks for any info!

Shalom

Remembrance Day for Fallen Soldiers begins on May 4 in the evening. All places of entertainment and restaurants will be closed then. At 8 p.m. there will be a siren for two minutes' silence. There will be another siren for two minutes' silence on May 5 at 11 a.m. For both of these, everything comes to a complete standstill. Cars stop; people stand in silence in the streets. Most tourist sites will be open on that day, as will businesses in general, and public transport runs as normal.

Independence Day begins on May 5 at 8 p.m. There will be firework displays and celebrations in most towns. Public transport runs on a reduced schedule on that evening and on May 6. All tourist sites will be open; businesses and nearly all shops will be closed on May 6. Restaurants and fast food places will be open.

The 4th in the evening everything will be clised including restaurants and places if entertainment like mivies and bars. The 5th most places will be open until 3-4 in thw afternoon. That evening there will celebrations everywhere which will be interesting for you. On the 6th alot if places are open some for limited hours. There is public transportation bus less than on regular days till 8 p.m. Sites and roads will be crowded throughout the country just about everywhere.

Israel's Memorial Day begins in the evening of May 4 this year - it is a very somber, sad day - there will be siren sounded countrywide at 8 pm, restaurants and all places of entertainment will be closed. You will be able to get a meal at your hotel in their dining room or coffee shop - if you arrive early enough you can also arrange for some takeout in advance.

On May 5 there will be a siren at 11 am during which time virtually everything will stop - including traffic - people will stand silently at attention wherever they are. In the afternoon restaurants will start to open, most tourist sites and parks will be open as usual.

In the evening Memorial Day will end and the Independence Day activities will begin - there will be music and stages for entertainment in most cities and towns. On May 6 itself expect most sites to be crowded, especially parks with families out for a picnic etc.

What time will you be arriving and where are you headed first?

Thank you all for your helpful information. I had no idea memorial day starts on the evening of May 4. We are driving from Netanya and staying in an apt on HaNasi street in Jerusalem and expect to arrive sometime in the afternoon of May 4th. Where do you recommend going to experience the Independence day celebrations in the evening of May 5 and during the day on May 6?

On the evening of May 4th all restaurants, cafes etc... will be closed, so stock on food during the day.

Anywhere within walking distance of where you ate staying. Check the Jerusalem municipality website to learn where the festivies are nearby.

Just for the information all Jewish holidays start the evening before at sunset and therefore also non-religious holidays in Israel start at sunset.

As said restaurants and stores are closed that evening. If you are going to an apartment you should strongly consider a small food shopping trip before leaving Netanya.
