Souvenirs in Jerusalem

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if you could recommend any nice places to buy souvenirs in Jerusalem. I got spoons (the souvenir collection ones) from the shop in Masada, but I will not be going there again this time. Is there any place in Jerusalem that I could find something like that and other souvenirs, preferably cheaper/good bargain?

Thank you.

The old city along David St. and up the Muslim quarter shuk has a multitude of souvenir shops. I mean a lot. Or there is along Ben Yehuda street in the new city.

The old city is good but be aware you definitely need to bargain in the markets there. Some of them are reasonable but others will try to fleece you badly. I would suggest visiting several stalls there quickly before buying to get a general overview of what the first asking price is.. I say 'quickly' because the longer you stay in a stall the more some of them pressure you. On average you probably end up paying half the original asking price... But someone who wants to fleece you plays on your ignorance and starts much higher than the rest. This year one guy tried to sell my husband a backgammon set for $1000 that I had seen elsewhere in several places for $20-25. I walked out of his stall the moment I heard that initial price!

Some nice shops towards the end of the Christian Quarter Road away from David Street and main tourist areas. Moses Aintablian: Armenian tiles, olive wood and other religious souvenirs at fairr prices. Eli Kouz Ceramics across the way for pottery at fixed prices. Yousef Natche at number 30 for fabrics and scarves and mother of pearl. Others in the Jewish Quarter - Shoshana close to the Broad Wall.

I forgot to mention one of my favourite shops.... In the Jewish Quarter in Hurva Square there is a shop called Shorashim. They specialise in things of a Biblical nature and I love the Biblical jewellery.

I like the shop at the Garden Tomb also... There is no big markup on anything there - it is all marked at a good price.

Agreed that a number of the church stores are also good places for gifts. There's one by the Dormition Abbey on Mount Zion.

Shorashim is a great shop. Also check out Rex just inside the Jaffa Gate near the beginning of the suk (the Arab market). Henry and his brothers who run it and will not cheat you. Tell them Douglas from Cincinnati sent you. :-) I've known these guys for years -- they used to run a simple little café/drink stop just inside the Jaffa Gate for years, and I miss it terribly as it was the PERFECT place to sit for an hour, have a beer or a lemonade, and watch the world go by. . . .

My favorite shop is GAns gifts. It is on Rivlin, ( #8) right off of Jaffa, not far from Ben Yehuda. Unique to them ( and Shorashim) is that everything sold there is actually made in Israel. They will give you a paper that tells you about the artist.

Here is their website, but remember they have a lot more than the website shows and many of the less expensive items are not online.
