Cheaper and easier is to rent a car for the day or get a guide/driver. A guide/driver might be a bit more expensive but will add alot to your experience. Do you want to visit Massada too on that day?

Will you also be in Jerusalem ? It is much easier to get to the Dead Sea from there.

What exactly do you want to do at the Sea ? Visit Massada, hike in the Ein Gedi Nature Reserve or just go for a dip (takes about 15 min because you just float on your back)? If you want to see Massada and go to a beach then you should consider an organised tour (Eggedtours, Ben Harim, United, etc). If you want to go to Ein Gedi - the easiest way is to take the bus from Jerusalem.

Organised tour for 5 (3 kids+2 grownup) is expensive. A driver/guide will be either te same or cheaper.

Thank you for your suggestion. We are planning to visit Jerusalem latter, in the last week of our stay. How long does it takes from Jerusalem to dead sea?

To answer your question we will need to know what is the point of origin in the dead sea... it's a pretty big area (67 km length).

It is approximately an hours drive to Ein Gedi from Jerusalem and another 30 minutes from there to Massada.

It is 30min drive from Jerusalem to Kalia on the north side of the Dead Sea.

Another 30 min drive to Ein Gedi.

15 min drive from Ein Gedi to the south and you are at Masada.

Extra 15 min drive to the south and you are at the hotels resort area.

All together the best way for you is to do the Dead Sea area from Jerusalem. Rent a car on the morning and drive by your own and give it back the morning later. It is within the mileage limit for a 1 day rental and I see no problem to do it that way.
