Reading the reviews, the place seems like a real dump. Are there any alternatives nearby without having to go into Amman? I'm renting a car and don't want to drive in the city.

You are right reviews are not good.

There is no other option if you want to stay near airport.

As Ali mentioned you can stay in Amman hotel it takes around 50 minutes but you enjoy your stay.
