Coastal road

Does anybody know if the coastal road from Muscat to Sur is oke to drive. Because the distance of this raod is 150 km to Sur ande the "highway" is 300 km. We are visiting Sur within two weeks and rented a car in Muscat. We would like to drive to Sur by ourselves. Meaby anyone has some tips what to do in Sur. We are staying there for 13 days.

We have a book here that says that the coastal road should only be tackled with a 4x4 and the journey time is 4 hours.

The longer route (341kms), only takes 3 hours or a bit more and most of it is either on RT-15 and then RT-23 and looks pretty straight forward.

The coastal road from Muscat to Sur is a good tarmac road and can easily be done with a normal 4x2 car, you don't need a 4WD for this stretch.

I do not know of a highway...unless the one from Muscat to Salalah but you don't need to take that one, nothing to see enroute.

Enroute make a picnic stop at the white sandbeaches south of Qurayat, visit the Bimah Sinkhole, stretch your legs at the Wadi Tiwi (there's a bridge being built now) and end your day in Sur.

In Sur, I don't know if you can fill 13 days there but ask a fisherman to take you around the creek, visit a boat yard, and definitely go to 'turtle beach', Ras Al Hadd, which is via tarmac and gravel road, drive to Wadi Bani Khalid.

Don't drive at night because no streetlamps and take a good road map along.

Have fun!
