Sights and tours for 4-day visit to Doha

Dear Fellow travellers

Hubby and I are about to fly to Doha for a brief 4-day holiday- and family fling visiting with our son, who has recently moved there to work. We have never been to Doha or Qatar before and hence looking for a few suggestions as to what to see, do etc. Most of our time we'll be with our son, who has an apartment on "The Pearl" - but he hasn't had time to explore much or do any genuine sightseeing himself so far - so we will all be "doing" Doha and surroundings for the first time. PS: We have been to Dubai previously, so we are bit familiar with the culture of life in this part of the world, but do likewise understand that Doha isn't yet so geared for tourists and that we, therefore, should keep expectations lower. So what we are looking for is:

1 "Must see" sights

2 Authentic areas/souks etc. not to be missed

3 Possible boat trips - i.e. "Sunset Cruise" or a relax/swim day on the Water (either by dhow and/or by a deluxe motor Vessel)

4 Brief tours into the desert/sand dunes

5 Fancy shopping Malls not to be visited

6 Restaurants with fantastic views or other features not to be missed

7 Any other info you think we'll like to know of for a first visit.

We are leaving this Thursday morning. In appreciation - thank you so very much.

Kind regards PURPLE

1 "Must see" sights

Museum of Islamic Art, Souq Waqif, Katara Cultural Village, Pearl Qatar, Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani Museum, State Grand Mosque, Doha Corniche, Al Shahaniya Camel Racetrack etc. are the major tourist attractions. Climate won’t be suitable for you to make day trips to many of these places except Museum of Islamic Art and Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani Museum.

2 Authentic areas/souks etc. not to be missed

Souq Waqif renowned for selling traditional garments, spices, handicrafts, and souvenirs has also dozens of restaurants serving cuisines from all over the world, as well as Shisha lounges. This market which dates back at least a hundred years is now considered one of the top tourist destinations within Doha.

3 Possible boat trips - i.e. "Sunset Cruise" or a relax/swim day on the Water (either by dhow and/or by a deluxe motor Vessel)

Sunset cruises/Dhow cruises are available from Doha Corniche

4 Brief tours into the desert/sand dunes

You can visit Qatar Int'l Adventures - http://www.qia-qatar.com/ for desert camps or dune bashing. Please note that this is not the ideal time for desert camping

5 Fancy shopping Malls to be visited

Lagoona, The Gate, Landmark, Villagio and City Centre

6 Restaurants with fantastic views or other features not to be missed

The Torch, Al Sharq, Intercon are having restaurants with great views.

As your son is living in Pearl Qatar, you will be staying in one of the most sought after localities in Qatar. Here you can enjoy shopping in the many high-end retail shops and walk along the beautiful boardwalk overlooking the marina filled with a variety of international cafes and restaurants. The Pearl is home to a wide selection of dining outlets covering a wide variety of cuisines. So, enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes - we do realize that he apparently is living in a very nice area - although in one of the totally new Towers on the "second" of the Pearls, which we understand are not really finalized yet. But we are indeed looking forward to strolling the promenade on the "first" Pearl to experience the atmosphere of this beautiful area. We are leaving tomorrow morning and are very excited :-). Thanks again for your good suggestions which will come very handy in. Have a nice evening - kind regards PURPLE
