Hola - visiting Uruguay

My wife and I would like to take the express ferry to Colonia del Sacramento on 6 Apr and spend about 5 hours there. Then we would like to take another ferry or bus to Montevideo for one night.

Could anyone suggest nice deals for 3-5 *** hotels, and the best ferry service from BA? And what is the best way to hire a car/driver to see the city?

On the 7th we would to visit Punta del Este, so we have the same questions. We have a flight from PDE to BA in the evening of the 7th?

Yes, I do know we are arriving during Semana Santa.

Finally what is the exchange rate UR$:US$.

Gracias por adalante,

Rob

Take the Buquebus ferry (1 hour to Colonia).

There are regular buses from Colonia to Montevideo, 2 1/2 hours.

For Punta del Este, you absolutely have to rent a car or you will not see the area. What people refer to as "Punta" covers 40 miles of coastline and it's very varied. If you take a bus to Punta del Este and just walk around you will only see the peninsula itself, which is NOT one of the nice parts although it has beautiful vistas out to sea. You cannot depend on local public transportation in Punta, as there rae very few buses and cabs are extremely expensive. With a car, you can drive from Montevideo in 1 hour 45 minutes (to the peninsula, passing Portezuelo and Punta Ballena on the way), then drive all the way along the coast to Jose Ignacio, passing through La Barra, Manantiales and Punta Piedra along the way.

Not really familiar with the range of Montevideo hotels.

Dear Rob, to go from BsAs to Colonia you´ve got 3 possibilities: Buquebus has slow and fast ferries; he fast one takes 1 hour, and it goes several times a day. The slow ferry (3 hours trip)leaves BsAs at 9 AM and it´s a lovely journey where you can enjoy also the outdoors on the boat. Then its the Colonia Express, (www.coloniaexpress.com) also a fast boat, departs 9 AM. You can take a cab from the harbours exit (on the Florida St., because of the building, they are not allowed to park inside)or you can easily walk towards the historical district. You can also go to Thrifty and rent a golf cart for a couple of hours, and have lots of fun driving yourself to the beach area. As soon as you return the golf cart at thrifty or Motorent, you walk 1 1/2 block to the bus station, and take a bus to Montevideo, either COT or Turil, and in 2 hours you arrive there. Hotel Meliá Comfort is in a nice area, close to shopping mall and coast road, check out also Cala di volpe or Sheraton here on TripAdvisor. May be you´d like to stay overnight in Colonia, and then go to Montevideo the next morning, because Colonia does that to people.:) In Punta del Este I know hotel Azul, on Gorlero St. very centric for a short stay downtown and on a walkable area. Hope it helps. Uruguayan money is the Peso, and its worth 22 for 1 US Dollar.

Rob,

For hotels, you might try CheapHotels.com, or CheapTickets.com. They might need a bit of navigating to get to MVD, not the one in Minnesota. Also, you might try a COT or CORSA bus from Tres Cruces if you don't have a ton of luggage. It is a nice 2-2.5 hour ride to PDE, and not too expensive.

Safe trip, Ant
