Mar del Plata Vs. Punta del Este

Hi All, I posted this over in Mar del Plata forum too, but also wanted to get the Punta viewpoint as well

I will be travelling to Argentina and through South America from January. After a decent stay in BA myself and my 3 friends (early 20s) are thinking of heading to either of these 2 beach towns (towards Jan 20-25ish). I would love to hear opinions on which would suit us better, for things to do, nightlife options, or anything else you think is important

From doing a little research, accommodation prices in Mar del Plata seems significantly cheaper. Does Punta justify the pricetag?

Appreciate any input you may have

I think you posted the same Q in the Mar del Plata forum. I didn't respond there because a couple of people already had said Punta is much better.

The Punta del Este area includes 40 miles of coastline, running from Punta Ballena to Jose Ignacio. It is spectacularly beautiful. It is always ranked, by those who know it, among the greatest resort areas in the world. But it is a quiet place, where people go for relaxation and to enjoy natural beauty and beaches and food and people; only the teenagers and just beyond teenagers go to the few clubs. In short, Punta is where the rich and famous go to chill out. Mar del Plata is a big city on the water, offering theater and everything else a big city offers.

The key, if you go to Punta, is to research the area beforehand and know where to spend your time. And rent a car, to be able to explore all that coastline.

One way to look at it . . . After your trip, when you're back home, and you mention which beach area you visited, if you say "Mar del Plata" you will likely get blank stars, but if you say "Punta del Este" and you're talking to someone who travels a good bit, you are likely to get an excited reaction.
