Bus or rental car?

We are going to Punta del Este next week from Montevideo. Does it make sense to rent a car? (3 day quote is $450) Or should we just take the bus and then taxis when in Punta del Este? Thanks

Sorry, I'll be more specific: we will start from Montevideo airport, staying at the Serena hotel at Playa Mansa for 2 nights, then moving to the Awa Hotel at Avenida Pedragosa Sierra y San Ciro. Thanks. Do you think we will need a car or are the areas happening enough on their own?

Firstly you are quite lucky to get a car quote this week for next week at all; the price you have may sound a lot, but it could be a lot worse - next week is the peak week of the year.

Serena is right on the beach, is very nice, but there is nothing lese in the immediate vicinity - you can take the local bus along the beach road to get into town, or take a taxi, there is nothing in walking distance.

AWA is much more downtown and near the shopping mall, cinema and upscale restaurants. You could walk into the 'action' part of Punta and the beaches, but this would be a bit uncomfortable in the heat of the day. with bags etc, depending on how hyou are with that! Buses not such an option here.

A lot depends what you want to do and how often:

If you want to go out in La Barra, go to Jose Ignacio , or even go to the David Guetta event on the night of the 3rd, you should really have your own car for flexibility and reliability - people have complained about avaialblity of taxis (let alone prices) at times when you are likely to want one, and that will only be worse next week.

If however you only want to go for a wander about in the evening, and otherwise chill by your pool or beach during the day, then you will have a net saving by using taxis for the limited amount of times you want one.

Tricky balance, if you can afford it, take the car.

If you do take the bus to Punta, it goes right past Serena, so you can get the bus to stop there & let you out - it'll save you the hassle of having to get a taxi back from the bus station. They are happy to do that.

Thanks a million for the expert advice. By next week, I mean we will arrive on Friday night the 6th, don't know if that makes any difference? After reading what you have written, we are leaning towards bus & taxi. Is it necessary to purchase the bus ticket in advance or just buy it before departure? Thanks again.

Bus ticket - buy on arrival - out the door walk to the right, see the COT office you are where you want to be - pesos 150 USD 8 UK 5 mx

Also forgot the bike possibility in Punta - I notice a lot of AWA clients use them - & there are a few hire companiesnot far away.

I don't know whether you wish to re-vist this, but I cannot help but noticing that the car rental companies in Punta seem to have an unusually large quantity of cars parked outside their offices - PuntaCar in particular www.puntacar.com - so maybe this year is turning out different for them all, but this is strange, so maybe a deal is still to be done!!
