My hospital deposit refund will come as a check in COP

After making a large deposit, I was allowed to be moved from the ambulance to private Las Vegas Clinica in Medellin. Even with the untrained eye, it was easy to tell from the x-ray that surgery would be required to stabilize my fractured kneecap. Scheduled for the following day, and now complete. I have a large refund ($2000+) coming back to me in COP when I go for post-op appointment. We'll be heading back to the States as soon as I can arrange a flight, but I need to know how a non-citizen can cash a check in Colombia. Is there a preferred method or any tips I should be aware of?

Kathie, I will try to make some inquires for you, having said that the majority of banking experience revolves around Bogota.

Most likely you should be able to cash the check at any major Colombian bank with picture ID i.e passport.

If it is a bank cheque it is very easy to cash; the bank will be obvious so find a branch and head in. Every one I have been to in Medellin to cash cheques requires a passport or cedula - you will probably not be able to do it with your licence. You will have to sign the back, place a finger print and for that amount of cash they will may offer the services of a police escort for a small fee.

Yes - go to the bank that issued the check, ask the hospital which branch they use, I assume it is the closest one, take your passport and cash it there.

While at the bank be aware of your surroundings, the scam usually is someone watching and then alerting another person on a moto that follows you in your cab and robs you when st a red light , chances of this happening are small but it has happened

Thank you for your suggestions. There is a new twist , or rather, a knot, in my dilemma. Expecting the refund after my 10 am appointment I was so glad to hear your tips. But the clinics admin offices kept us waiting for 5 hrs . We took a cab directly to the clinics bank and by that time the banks were closed , although the clinic had assured us the bank would be open til 7 and on the following day (New Years eve) until 1:00. Needless to say by the time we flew out early on Jan 2, banks had been closed all three days we had the check. Several banks here in US have tried to help, only to call on next day reporting that their facility DOESN'T deal with Colombian funds. ANY SUGGESTIONS please?

Ouch. I fear a fairly simple situation just turned very complicated.

Worse case scenario you'll have to return to Colombia. I hope it doesn't come to that...

Good luck.

Cheers,

Terry

It's been nice chatting with so many good folks who obviously enjoy Latin America like I do. I've now checked 3 more money exchange companies. As of 1/15/2014 I can report that none of them have any dealings with Colombian pesos.

I won't mind at all returning to Colombia once I get my knee back in shape. (If you ever travel via the modern Medellin bus station/mall, BEWARE of the floor planters in front of the ticket windows. They're the only relief in the clean smooth floor, and they're real bone-breakers!)
