Travel South of Georgetown by Bus

We arrive in Georgetown on March 2nd and need to travel to Surama, and then back 5 days later. I believe the Intraserv bus serving this route travels only on Sundays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Since we arrive on a Wednesday we would take the bus on Thursday, travel overnight (it leaves at 8 pm) and arrive on Friday. Can we book tickets once we arrive in GT, a day ahead of the bus, or should we arrange that ahead of time? If so, how do we do that? And what about the mini-buses that travel this route? Lonely Planet says they are a bit cheaper and faster but susceptible to robberies. Does anyone have some recent advice and recommendations? Also does anyone have a recommendation of a hotel close to the international airport?

The main danger with the mini-buses is not so much the threat of robberies, as the excessive speed at which they are driven.

Berbician is absolutely correct. Having plied that route many times, including a few by mini bus, I have to say that unless your life is worth less to you than $100USD, avoid the minibus and stick to Intraserv or the daily TGA flights into the interior.

Just a quick note - thank you to the two people who sent information! We are back from our trip and we did decide to take the Intraserv bus. For future readers of this post with an interest in the Intraserv bus... It runs only 4 days a week and it does fill up so you should make a reservation (via phone or email - we had our hotel call and make our reservation for us), and the sooner you pay for your seats the closer to the front your seats will be since they assign seat numbers when you pay. Our trip south from Georgetown to Surama (just south of the Iwokrama Reserve) took 14.5 hours, and the return trip was 13 hours. The trip south was longer because twice everyone had to get out of the bus (at 4:30 in the morning) and walk to the top of a hill because the bus couldn't make it up! The drivers both directions were great and we enjoyned the comaraderie of our fellow passengers. We had numerous local people warn us not to take the mini-buses because of the high speeds. We felt very safe and had a wonderful trip!
