Wedding in Samoa

Hi everybody,

We decided to get married in Samoa on 20.10.2010 so not much time left. :) After reading many many posts on tripadvisor it seems that the people in the resort are very nice and enjoy arranging weddings. Which on the other hand makes it very difficult to choose the resort, and the place - the garden, the beach, the pool, the canoe? :)) I hope you can share your experience with us to help us decide. :)

In regards to the price, we checked the wedding packages and it seems that the prices went quite high in last couple of years. As some of you were mentioning paying 1000 WST the resorts mostly quote around 1500 USD now.

Is it possible that Savaii would be cheaper than Upolu? And how is the situation with the photographers, do they still need to travel from Upolu and is there somebody on Savaii now?

It is going to be only 2 of us so very small private wedding but we still want to have a special day. We are thinking Samoan traditional wedding dress, can someone send me a picture if you had it made there? And how can we arrange the witnesses?

Does anybody have any experience with hairdresser and make-up service on Samoa? Is it including trial prior the wedding and is the service good, and what is the price?

Well, I guess that's all now. :) We hope to have some comments soon.

I've been to a few weddings here in Samoa and the best would be at Sinalei Reef Resort and Aggie Greys Lagoon Beach Resort and Spa, you could also try Le Vasa and Le Uaina. Whoever is organising the wedding should be able to also organise hair & makeup etc as well as the photograher but if you want to get one independantly then there is a very good one in Apia, her name is Efi and her email addy was mentioned in another forum post about weddings, sorry I can't remember it, perhaps someone else will help with it.

If you are thinking of Savaii then try Le Lagoto, it coould well be cheaper and they will do everything for you. It's also a beautiful resort on a lovely stretch of beach.

The price seems a little high to me given that there is only 2 of you but if that is what you've been given by those resorts you have tried then I would say it's the same across the board.

As for witnesses, anywhere you decide to have the wedding members of the staff will be more than willing to participate.

Are you coming over before the wedding to have the dress sized, fitted and made - I would say it would be difficult to accomplish from NZ unless you can find a Samoan dressmaker there, again someone else may have some other ideas they can post.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Hi Deb,

Thanks a lot for your help.

We have the prices from Le Vasa and Le Uaina, we might still try Le Lagoto, thanks for the tip. I have the contact for Efi from other posts, unfortunately someone was saying that the travelling costs to Savai makes the photographers costs very high, do you know if there is also photographer on Savai?

Arranging the hairdresser and make-up specialist is not a problem for the resorts, I was rather asking for the personal experience with the quality level of Samoan hairdressers and make-up specialists? Can someone help?

Also has anybody done canoe wedding? Do you think it is more romantic than just a wedding on the beach or in the garden? Or is it a bit comical or 'silly'?

Thanks to everybody who might share their personal experiences.

I was married in Samoa three years ago, on Lalomanu beach, which some say (and I agree!) is the most beautiful beach in Samoa.

We were married at Taufua Beach Fales, which is where our extended family live. It's very basic, most definitely not a resort, but it was a very gorgeous wedding! We had 30 guests, but you could have a small wedding there and use some of the staff or family members as your witnesses. Some of the family there are permitted (by the authorities) to carry out the ceremony if you didn't want a pastor or minister to do it. They can provide all the necessary forms, registrations etc at the Samoa end - you just need to provide the relevant documentation from your home country.

If you are quite fussy about the arrangements, like the cake, makeup, hair etc, then perhaps a beach fale wedding might not quite make the grade for you though! You need to be quite easy going about it, as sometimes things don't happen quite how we imagine - lol! Everything seems to move on island time.

However, if you opt for one of the resorts, of course everything will be on a timeline, but as you have foudn out, you pay the price for that, it's more expensive than the old beach wedding!

We had a fabulous day on ours, it was just wonderful on the beach. We had the option of the canoe etc, but I just wanted us to wander down to the beach and have the ceremony on the sand with no fuss or bother. It really was a day to remember.

Anyway, good luck with your decision! Happy to answer further questions about beach fales if you have any.

Hi Tina,

Thanks a lot for your answer. To be honest, I am only fussy about my hair, otherwise I do not mind if something does not happen exactly in a planned way. :) My posts are just because I want to have more opinions to help us to decide between canoe wedding or beach/garden.

I really wanted to compare what different resorts or places offer but seems very hard to get any answers (except for Le Vasa, they are great). I also contacted Taufua, unfortunately no answer so far. :(

Thanks once again.

Malo!

Taufua may take a while to get back to you, they have a very limited internet connection since the tsunami took out all the infrastructure. They still have very intermittent power and water, and no landline phones. The phone system is currently running on a wireless local loop. But I'm sure someone will get back to you when they can :o)

Best of luck with your decision!
