Two couples holidaying - surfing and fishing

We are planning a holiday to Samoa 2012 for our anniversary. The husbands want fishing and surfing. Can anyone suggest places to stay and best time of year to come? Thanks

Malo lava

Small world, I'm at Woombah at the moment, moving between here and Woolgoolga so just around the corner.

The best time of year for travel to Samoa is in the dry season May-October although there's no guarantee that you'll get good weather all the time. The seasons in Samoa are changing like the rest of the world. We're just back after 6 months so had part wet and part dry and there really wasn't that much difference except for the humidity being very oppressive in the wet - November to April.

If the husbands want fishing and surfing what do the wives want??????

With the fishing it's mostly offshore so involves chartering a fishing boat which can be quite expensive - approx 700 tala for 1/2 day. Check out Yellowfin Charters, Lady Saele, Alfreds Charters, Samoa Adventure and Troppo Fishing. You can fish from the shore if you can find the right place but bear in mind that you will probably have to pay a small fee for using the beach as it is cultural land and sometimes the only form of income for the villagers - the same applies for surfing, swimming, snorkelling or just generally hanging out on a beach that is away from a tourist area.

Because of the tsunami in 2009 there have been many changes to the reef and consequently to surfing on Upolu. All the surf camps were wjped out but Samoana Resort still takes surfers out to the reef and Samoa Adventures and Offshore Adventures also do organised trips. Most surfing in Samoa is reef surfing so the husbands should be very experienced as the undercurrents in Samoa are amazingly powerful. If you decide on Upolu then look at staying at Samoana, it's a lovely resort in beautiful surroundings with great food and also a pool.

Since the tsunami you'll find the best surf in Savaii as it was relatively untouched. The best places are Savaii Surfaris who have a a fale resort at Aganoa Beach on the south west coast, accommodation is very basic though and is really only dedicated to surfing not relaxing and lazing around. Some of the best surfing can also be found at Asau on the north east coast and the best accommodation there is Auga Seaside Lodge, Va-i-Moana (a truly stunning little resort, a real piece of paradise with great food, and Vaisala Hotel (which I love, it's a little run down but has this great little honeymoon cottage right on the beach with air con and hot water - a rarity in budget accomm in Samoa and the best food). The other area where surfing can be arranged is on the tourist stretch of accom at Manase Beach and the village of Fagamalo where you'll find a handful of fale resorts (I suggest you stay at least 1 night in a fale - a open hut with a mattress and thatch roof, just for the experience of sleeping under the stars and going to sleep listening to the waves rolling over the reef). There are 2 great resorts here as well - Savaii Lagoon Resort which is so warm and welcoming and the great Le Lagoto Resort next door. Also contact Raci's Beach Club at Manase and they will be able to advise about surf trips.

There are shore breaks on Savaii but once again for the very experienced. It's a good idea to hire a car on both islands so you have the freedom to choose where and when you want to stop and for how long,

Without knowing your budget it's a little hard to recommend accommodation. I suggest you got to jasons.com/samoa which has anything and everything to do with Samoa and samoa-hotels.ws - both provide extensive lists of accommodation for all sorts of budgets.

I hope this long winded answer helps and please come back if you have any further questions.

Manuia le aso (have a great day)

hi

some other places you could consider ( like deb said its hard to suggest without knowing your budget)

My husband also loves fishing and has been out with most of the charters deb has suggested, they are all great, prices do vary, so email them and get the current prices.

but if a bigger budget ( after all its your anniversary!!!)

sinalei - top pick if big budget! amazing resort small intimate great accomodation, food!! ( i could go on an on!) they have fishing charters, and they could arrange surfing tours as well, and for you, they have massges, lovley beaches, pool... very relaxing.

SaMoana resort- originally a surfing resort so caters extremely well to surfers offeing heaps of surfing tours , sometimes right out frount of the resort but most times they take the little van and go to amazing breaks around the island. but they also are great even for non surfers - the resort is very pretty, amazing lava style pool on the edge on the lava rocks. the food is fantastic, the room styles vary ( no air con in any) between dorm style rooms, to 1 bedroom rooms with great outdoor style bathrooms.

cocnuts - i havent stayed here so cant comment , they have rebuilt since the tsunami and i know they offer surfing and fishing tours.

a new place to check out ( there web site will be launched soon, opening about may) is seabreeze resort. not sure of the tours they will offer, but i know the resort will be amazing .

hope this helps

Thank you both for the information. We were looking at Upolu, but we have nothing set in stone yet. Us girls will be hanging by the pool, drinking cocktails, reading and being pampered at one of the many spas!

We don't really have a budget in mind yet, but we do only have one holiday at year and we want to make it pretty special, we also have no kids and have a double income.

Are things you can suggest we do while the boys are surfing?

Hi miss parker

there is always something to do - but sometimes its doing nothing thats best !!! like you said relaxing by the pool, cocoktails, day spa, then there's :

the day trips into the markets in apia and plantation house for some shopping.

sliding rocks ( in apia)

waterfalls to check out

day trip to lalomanu beach (amazing beach and fun snorklelling)

ocean trench

are you hiring a car ( we always hire a car, much more convience to get around at your own pace)

stopping in at other resorts for lunch

cheers sue

Lucky you. What to do depends on where you stay. If it's somewhere like the bea.utiful Le Uaina then you are only 20 mins out of Apia so you could hire a car or even more fun catch one of the very colourful, overcrowded, air conditioned (no windows), loud buses in and get a cab home. Taxis are super cheap in Samoa. In Apia check out the markets, there are some great clothes, accessories, knick knacks, traditional jewellery etc to be found and bargaining makes it a lot of fun. There's plenty of good places to eat in town and a visit to Papasee'a Sliding Rocks is worth a look.

The best way to get around is by hiring a car then you can decide what you want to do, where and when at your own leisure. You can't get too lost as there is only one main road around the island and one across the middle. Take the time to stop and talk to the villagers and experience a little Samoan culture, who knows you might get a free Samoan delicacy. There's also some stunning scenery to be found all around the island and lots of places where you can stop and have a swim.

Seeing you don't have a set budget I'd definitely go with Sue's suggestion of Sinalei, it is an amazing resort and nothing else on the island compares with it. They've done a remarkable job of rebuilding after the tsunami. If you don't like the idea of hiring a car you could pick up a couple of day tours which reception at Sinalei would be happy to arrange for you. Otherwise just sit back, chill and enjoy being pampered in paradise.
