Hi there

Take repellent! That's the best thing to do. Yes there can be mosquitoes, and sandflies. Take something strong like Bushman repellent, or there are also impregnated bracelets you can wear to keep them away. They are available on Trademe, or at any hiking store, or you can ask your pharmacist.

Hi Reyna

There are mozzies all over the south pacific, not just Samoa. And there are also mozzies in Auckland as I'm sure you must have noticed!

As tinzaroo says, repellant is the answer. The temperature doesn't vary much in Samoa throughout the year, although the winter months are a little less humid. But the little creatures are still there, just maybe not so many.

But if, as you say, you get eaten alive, ask your pharmacist before you go and make sure you are fully prepared.

If you take a course of vitamin B tablets for about a month before you go, this will act as a most effective deterrent.

The creatures do not like the smell of Vitamin B in the blood stream.

I got this hint from debdestiny of this Samoa forum. :0)

Cheers.

Just returned from Samoa - my advice is too stay away from Virgin Cove - On Upolo, never seen so many mosquito's day and nite!! Dettol mixed with baby oil is a great repellent, and take shoes, socks, long pants and sweatshirt - even though you will melt through the heat.

Malo again

Please don't let the mozzies put you off ... just get a good repellent! Yes Virgin Cove has a lot of mozzies as most of it's fales are in a mangrove type area. But a good repellent will see you right.

It would be ridiculous to stay away from a place or to wear winter clothes just because of mosquitoes.

Check out this link for some good repellents. You can even buy online.

LOL , Its like asking whether it SNOWS in the Antartic? =)

yep there will be a lot ! , and so will every other south pacific island.

All has to do with the environment/ weather/humidity But dont let that dis-courage you.

All I can reiterate (like the previous posts) is - Pack up the repellants try those containing DEET, you may find that when you do use them regularly it may decrease their effectiveness when you use sun screen/ creams etc.

All said , it would be ridiculous to let that be the primary reason as to your lack of enthusiasm and excitement. You may return with a mosquito bite or two ..but mind you ..it will be worth it ! =) hehe

Happy traveling !
