Samoa travel advice!

Hi,

Myself and a friend are planning on going to Samoa in June or July for about a week. Neither of us have been to the Pacific Islands before and were wondering if anyone had recommendations on places to stay or what to do while we are there?

We are both quite active and like being outdoors. While we would like to spend some time relaxing we would also like to explore the area.

Any advice is appreciated!

Thanks.

The first week of June Samoa will be celebrating its 50th anniversary of independance, celebrations will be going on for the entire week. If you were going to go for just a week it will be one of the most exciting weeks to be in Samoa and to be in Apia. On the downside I read in the papers that all accom in Apia is totally booked out, but there are nice places to stay outside of the capital.

Of course if that doesnt take your fancy then I highly recommend clicking on Deb or Tina's name on the side bar(under Destination Expert) and reading some of their recommendations for places to stay and things to do.

One of my fave places to stay is Amanaki centrally located in town and really good service. Fave place to visit Papaseea(Sliding Rocks) or Togitogiga a national park with a fresh water pool on the other side of the island(sometimes its dry though so its a bit of pot luck if you'll have water to swim in or not.)

If you're going to be there on on 01 June, be sure to catch the UB40 concert in town! That's a pretty huge event for Samoa, and is part of the celebrations for Samoa's 50th anniversary of independence.

Read up about beach fales and come back with your questions.

Samoa is a great place to start exploring the Pacific Islands, it is where all Polynesian islands were populated from many thousands of years ago and a true Paradise.

What sort of budget are you looking at? As Ms_eLLLe said there will be fantastic celebrations to commemorate the 50th year of Independence but they will not be limited to Apia, all of Samoa will be celebrating.

If you want to get in touch with the Samoan culture, people and food etc then the best places to stay are beach fales, I recommend Taufua Beach Fales at Lalomanu Beach on the south-east coast of Upolu, the fales are basic with a mattress and pull down sides if it begins to rain or get windy. There's nothing like going to sleep listening to the waves rolling over the reef.

If roughing it a bit doesn't appeal to you and depending on your budget I'd say Seabreeze Resort, Le Uaina or Sinalei would be the best for relaxing and good bases for exploring the island. Do you intend to hire a car? It really is the best way to discover Samoa, at your own pace, stopping when and where you want for as long as you like. There are organised tour companies but they tend only to go to the main sight-seeing spots and cost up to 150 tala each. A Hyundai Getz will set you back around 120 tala a day, less if you take it for more days.

A good source of info on accommodation and everything Samoan, including activities is jasons.com/samoa - have a look there and see what you think you might like. Also check out samoa-hotels.ws

Apart from Independence Day, June & July are smack bang in the middle of the high tourist season so it's a good idea to try and book as far ahead as you can (at least 8-10 weeks) so you don't miss out.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the advice.

It looks like we might be coming in July now so will have to skip the celebrations.

Have been checking out the Taufua Beach Fales and am quite keen on them!

Would anyone recommend spending a night in Apia when we arrive or hiring a car and driving to Lalomanu Beach straight away?

Cheers!

I always head straight to Lalomanu, but maybe go via Apia so you can have a quick look and grab any supplies that you might want. On the map it looks longer if you go through Apia, but it's actually about the same as the roads are a little better. The south coast road gets a bit of a hammering and it can be quite pot-holey at times!

However a night / day in Apia could be quite fun, and you could see all the sights, visit the markets, visit Palolo Deep for some snorkelling etc.
