Start planning, where to stay, what activities?

My soon to be husband and I are heading to Vanuatu in March for 13 nights for our Honeymoon. We have no idea what islands to go to, where to stay and what to do when over there.

In terms of budget and quality of accommodation, we’re looking at staying at a variety of places.

For the first few nights we we’re thinking just somewhere nice but reasonably priced ($AU80-120).

After that we would like to stay somewhere cheap/backpackerish. Is there any nice islands that have cheap local bungalows on the beach? Around AU$30 would be awesome.

We’re also looking for somewhere at the complete opposite end of the scale for a few nights and stay in somewhere beautiful before coming home. Any suggestions?

We’re happy to change islands/go off the beaten track/not be overly touristy.

We would like a mix of adventure and relaxing. We would like to see the culture, going on walks, visit the volcano etc. Is there any day trips anyone could suggest?

Thanks for the help!

Hi Laumack,

Firstly congratulations on your upcoming wedding.

Your question suggests that you may be used to travelling in SE Asia because $AU80-120 is cheap in Vanuatu.

Somewhere nice is going to cost quite a bit more than that. The closest thing I can think of would be Oyster Island on Santo (fly to Pekoa).

Off the beaten track would be somewhere like Lonnoch Beach Bungalows which is the closest you'll get to the AU$30.

For a volcano however you'd need to fly to Tanna, Ambae, Ambrym, Lopevi or Gaua.

So perhaps take a look at Tanna Island. You could contact Tanna Evergreen Resort for advice. Keep in mind that island hopping adds to your flying costs.

The least expensive thing to do would be find a place at a price that suits you on either Efate (Vila) or Santo and base yourself there.

For Vila you could start at The Melanesian, then progress to one of the village owned bungalows and finish off at Hideaway Island or Erakor Island to finish off.

Day trips would depend upon where you base yourself, Santo, Tanna, Efate or one of the others.

Hope this helps,

Hi and congrats!

You could stay a few nights at a cheap place in Port Vila on arrival (check here under the link on the left of this page and also Wotif etc for any deals and then contact the resort directly as they will sometimes better that deal). There are also places right in town like City Lodge for about $40-65 per night. Then fly to Tanna and stay in the backpacker type bungalows at Tanna Evergreen for around $40 a night but the guided trip to the volcano will be about $90 each (entry to the volcano area on its own is $40pp so $50 for transport is cheap considering the cost of vehicles and that its about 1.5hr drive from the airport side of the island). Visiting a live volcano on your honeymoon will be something you never forget! There are also bungalows nearer the volcano but the transport there is expensive so you end up paying one way or the other to cross the island.

To find somewhere nice for a few nights before you fly home, again check out what deals are available.....but something beautiful will cost more like $300/night.

From Port Vila you can visit small islands for the day or stay over in bungalow accommodation on islands such as Nguna, Pele, Lelepa, Emao, Moso etc.

You will have to do some research to find out which suits you.

Have fun choosing!
