can you do Vanuatu volcanoes on a students budget alone?

I really want to see the volcanoes, but not have to stay in over priced bungalows. What r the prices like there? Can u camp? What is the safety like? Eg for a single Travelling white girl? Do u reccommend booking while there? Also Has anyone been there around xmas holiday times eg Nov, Jan, Feb

Hi Jamie

You can get accommodation in Port Vila at the Sportsmen's Hotel for around $25/night shared bathroom.

tripadvisor.com.au/Hotel_Review-g294144-d315… You can also get cheap meals for about $10 there 24/7.

If you are open in regard to dates to go to Tanna to the volcano Mt Yasur, contact Vanuatu Air Taxi and go on standby for 10,000vt each way (about $110). Stay at Tanna Evergreen in a shared facilities bungalow for about $40pp/night inc breakfast. The tour to the volcano is about $90 (including the $45 entrance fee). Cheap meals are available at Tanna Evergreeen. Or you could stay somewhere like Friendly Bungalows near the volcano but the transport there is about the same price as the volcano tour from the airport side of the island where Evergreen is. It is safe for girls/women...anyone really. People take kids there. Airfares to Vanuatu will be more expensive in the xmas school holidays unless you nab a special between now and then. There are volcanos on other islands but would probably be too expensive to get to.
