Christmas in Vanuatu

Hi there,

My husband & I are spending December 23-30 in Port Vila, very excited to have a nice relaxing Christmas for a change!

We would appreciate some advice on whether everywhere (shops/restaurants etc) shuts on Christmas Day and/or any other days around then? Also is it advisable to book somewhere for dinner sooner than later? We're in self-catering accommodation so no dramas if we can't eat out - but just wanted to check how organised we need to be in terms of grocery shopping!

Thanks all, Naomi :-)

The major super markets will be open all through Xmas week (and even a few hrs on xmas day if I recall correctly). Some small chinese supermarkets would also be open part of the day. The markets will be closed of course with everyone going back to their families.

Depending on where you had in mind for Xmas lunch (big resorts maybe a month before and smaller places a few weeks before).

Iririki was great last year, Xmas buffet with all the trimmings, a children's choir, santa came to each table, xmas crackers and lots of champagne served at your table. We lay by the pool after that for a few hours!

Tamanu and Le Lagon are also popular for Xmas lunch and provide some sort of entertainment. It depends on if you would mind kids being around or want a quiet time :)

Have fun!

Bon marche supermarkets operate the same as any other day on Christmas day, meaning they will open around 7am and close about 7pm. Downtown is open later but central will be closed. Remember also that Christmas day is a public holiday so no alcohol sales outside of resorts

Thank you both! We'd prefer to have a quieter time if possible, does anyone know if Elan will be open and if so, how to book there?

There may be less of them, but even if half of them stay home there still may be too many buses. lol.

Just a week 'til we go now, getting excited! Follow-up question about the markets, since we get there on Sunday 23rd, will they be open at all before Christmas?

Thank you!
