Port Vila, Toddler, Malaria & April!

Hi all,

We are off to Port Vila in April. Very comfortable about where we are staying (Villa 25 - www.vanuatuaccommodation.vu) as it comes very highly recommended by people we trust. A few questions:

1. We have a toddler, is there any risk of Malaria in Port Vila?

2. We understand that April is the last month of the rainy season - is it likely we will get much sun during our stay?

3. What things are there that we can do that are suitable for a 2 year old?

Thanks in advance. Getting very excited to see Vanuatu for the first time.

You would have to be very very unlucky to get malaria in PV. Use repellant from about 4pm if you are outside to avoid any insect bites.

You will get more sun in PV than in London! See other recent posts on this topic. Rain wont stop you doing anything really.

I would just take a 2 year old along with anything I was doing. But forget taking a stroller unless you just want to use it around the house. The streets in PV aren't built for them, you are better off with a backpack type carrier. The traffic is very slow so car seats are not used as a rule. If you are hiring your own car for the whole time you could get one included but forget them for buses, taxis and other local transport.

Have fun!

We travelled to Efate in September last year with a four year old and an 8 month old. We took mosquito nets for the kids which were really useful as the mossies definitely liked to hang out in their rooms at night. I also sprayed the rooms before the kids went to bed. I kept both kids in long sleeved light cotton clothes most of the time. We used mossie coils and also repellant for the four year old. He got bitten but the baby didnt!

We ummed and aahd about taking a stroller and in the end took a fairly sturdy umbrella one - which was really useful in airports as well as around Port Villa. Yes the roads are rough, but it was too hot to wear a baby all the time - and sometimes he just wanted to chill out in the buggy.

There's heaps to to with kids - highlights were Erakor Island (safe swimming, starfish to look at etc), drinking coconuts and eating fresh peanuts from the markets, Mele Cascades (but not on a cruise ship day), playground next to the markets, Beach Bar across the water from Hideaway etc...

Have a great trip!
