how long to stay Port Villa

planning trip to Port Villa in October this year,

How long is the average time people spend in Port Villa?

can one stay in port villa the entire time or should we split our time with another location?

planning 7 day trip and not sure if this is too long or too short.

Thinking of doing snorkelling, relaxing..some shopping (altho i been told not a lot of that in Vanuatu), waterfalls, mix with the locals.

Also is it best to book tours here in australia before we leave or wait until we arrive?

are taxis easy to get and are the cheap...

been to Bali last yr...

any comparison with pricing

is vanuatu cheap?

any hot tips be great...or should we go Fiji?

We are heading back in September and could easily spend 7 days there, but maybe not to much longer...

snorkelling I'd great over there, we will be going to hideaway island for the day snorkelling and buckets of beers :)

Booking in Australia is fine but most likely cost you more, depending on which hotel your staying at they can book it for you over, I've done it both ways and never had a problem

Taxis and buses will drive past you at least every 30 seconds! Look at the number plate if it has a b at the start its a bus if it has a t it's a taxi, buses are cheaper, but taxis are fine. Depending how far your going no more than a few hundred vatu, ALWAYS get the price before you get in, some would try to charge you a bit more when you get there if you haven't got a price up front

vanuatu isn't that much cheaper, I've never been to Bali but lets just say if you went out for dinner had a few drinks you would be looking at about 2000-2500 vatu which is about $20-$25 but the service everywhere is out of this world! So freindly

As for tips have fun and soak it up!

Its easy to spend a week in Vanuatu and still feel like you haven't seen everything. New activities are starting all the time. Have a look at the Things To Do list at the top of this page and you will get an idea. Just getting out of town and lazing on a beach is great too, rather than always doing organised activities or tours.

If you are planning on tours book them when you arrive either at your accommodation or in town. Or do some research and just catch a local bus to what you want to see. Just book the night before that way you wont be disappointed if the weather turns on you.

Vanuatu is nothing like Bali, but still has lots of cheap junk shops and souvenirs made in China.

Just keep in mind that you get what you pay for in terms of accommodation and depending on what standard you are after you will most likely be paying more than Bali. But you will have beautiful scenery, no hard sell, friendly locals, great adventure, good food and water sports.

cheers

Simply put, no Vanuatu is NOT cheap. There is little comparison to Bali. Prices are similar to back here in Australia, and whether you consider it to be good value for money might depend on the place and day you eat or do things :-)

For 7 days there is no need to change accommodation, as everything in and near Port Vila is easily accessible by bus and taxi, both of which are plentiful. 7-10 days is a good stay for a first trip, it will allow you to explore and do stuff and determine if you want to come back or go to another island or indeed another country like Fiji.

If you want to book tours etc just go to Evergreen's office opposite the Anchor Inn pub. Don't forget to take the 10% discount voucher found on your Immigration/Quarantine entry card from the airport!

While it is fun to cruise the shops and duty frees in the main street it isn't really a shopping destination of note at all.

The major emphasis is physical activities especially water sports, and the Evergreen Pele Island day trip is one well worth doing.

Most importantly get ready to adapt to the "island time" concept and don't expect anything to happen fast. The people are extremely friendly and happy, but also quite shy.

If you are into excellent coffee don't forget to go check out the Tanna coffee processing facility just out past Hideway Island. We always bring back 5kgs of their excellent organic coffee!

Evergreen tours are excellent. Just book when you get there. We have done many tours over the years and always tell friends to go through them. Pele island is a favorite of ours. Have fun!
