Virunga National Park, on the opposite site of the Congolese border to Uganda's Mgahinga National Park, has just announced a half-price promotion on the gorilla and volcano treks for a limited time only. From 20 May - 5 June 2011 (17 days), you can visit the gorillas in Congo for $200, and for $100 make the 2-day trek to the Nyiragongo volcano rim to see our one-and-only boiling lava lake.
Transportation can be arranged through the park for an additional cost. The Bukima Patrol Post Tented Camp is a perfect place to stay overnight before visiting the gorillas. The price of $40 includes a simple dinner, and breakfast before beginning your trek.
Reserve a space on one or both treks by emailing tourism at gorilla.cd, or drop by the Virunga National Park tourism office in Goma. Payment must be confirmed at least 3 days before the trek or your reservation will be cancelled.
The US Dept of State Travel Warning for the DRC is here:
You won't find me going there any time soon!
