Applying for Visa in US

Hi, hopefully someone here can give me a little advice regarding my visa application for

as part of a multi-country trip to SE Asia, I'm planning on visiting Myanmar. I won't be anywhere I can obtain a visa in person during the trip, so I need to do this before I leave the US.

Today's the 14th of April and I'm leaving the US on the 15th of May (though I won't go to Myanmar until the 15th of June). I think I have time to apply by mail (I don't live close to DC or NYC), but I want to make sure that I have the application as complete as possible to minimize any delays.

I've been filling out the application and it asks for a few items I'm hoping people here can advise me about:

1. Tickets: Do I actually need copies of my airline tickets? Right now I have a ticket booked out of Myanmar, but I don't have the ticket to Myanmar booked yet (mostly because of price). Will that be enough or do I also need the arrival ticket?

2. Itinerary: Do I need to list everywhere I want to visit? If so, in what kind of detail?

3. Hotel: The forms ask for hotel name. Can I just choose one hotel in Yangon and list that without actually having booked it? Or should I actually book places and list them?

Any other advice?

I know several posters here have gone through this process and I'm really looking forward to gaining from your experience. Thanks in advance.

Mailed completed forms to DC on 17 Sept and received visa back on 29 Sept 07. 1. Don't know for sure if copy of ticket is necessary but I would guess yes. I included copy of eticket confirmation. 2. I did not include any itinerary. I think they mean the itinerary portion of your airline ticket. 3. I only listed one hotel where I was staying the first night in Yangon. I suspect any hotel name will do.

Thanks. That's very helpful. It's exactly the information I was looking for.

At least I don't have to tell them where I'm going to be every day when I don't even know myself yet!

Now I just need to find an airline ticket from Siem Reap to Yangon for less than $400! (Which I'm thinking isn't going to happen....unfortunately.)

The above is on Bangkok Air via (of course) Bangkok. The only place I can find to sell it is Air Gorilla and fee is about $380 plus another $17 for a paper ticket.

Anyone have any other suggestions?

Hi Travelgail,

Try AirAsia at www.airasia.com I just got Bangkok Yangon return for £69.00 which is roughly about USD 140.00 (although admittedly I am not going until October). Siem Reap or Cambodia is just a little bit further, so could be more. the other factor is that I don't think there are direct flights between Cambodia and Myanmar (not that I am aware of); so your flight would probably be via Bangkok!

Good luck.

Hi Travelqail,

Just out of interest, I just checked Air Asia website. Air Asia flights from Seam Reap goes to KL rather than BKK! There are however, Air Asia flights between Phnom Phen and BKK wich, around the time you will be travelling, June 2008, is quoting about 75-80 USD single i.e one way. There are economy promotions, however, for about USD 23.00 ! check them out to see if they will suit you! BKK to Yangon is quoted at 499 Thai Bhat each way. Mind you they do restrict your baggage to 15 Kgms only!

Best Wishes,

Try their site , you may have to buy the etickets as seperate sectors but site shows schedules/connections in BKK

http://www.bangkokair.com/

I used them in January into BKK , great airline/service.

Hi Khayeethe,

Thanks for the information about Air Asia. Unfortunately, I don't think anything will work out whether I go from Siem Reap to Bangkok to Yangon or from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh to Bangkok to Yangon.

There's just no way I can see given the Air Asia flight schedules for me to get from Siem Reap to Yangon in less than 2 days. I need to overnight in Bangkok.

It's not that I have anything against Bangkok, but I only have about 10 days to spend in Myanmar anyway. And once I factor in paying for a hotel and taxis in Bangkok for overnight, I'm not really saving much money and I'm losing a day.

Thanks for the suggestions, though!

Hi silverswimmer,

Thanks for the information about Bangkok Air.

My only problem with booking on the Bangkok Air website is that it won't let me book the tickets (from Siem Reap to Bangkok and from Bangkok to Yangon) on one ticket.

Because of this, I'm afraid that they won't check my luggage through and I don't have time to pick it up in Bangkok and recheck it (the time between the 2 flights is only 1 hour and 15 minutes).

Also, the website says I need to pick up the tickets physically at least 2 hours before the flight. Since I won't even be in Bangkok until 1 hour 15 minutes before the flight to Yangon, this won't work either.

I'm thinking about booking the flights on Bangkok Air on vayama.com. It's more money than on the Bangkok Air website, but they'll deliver the tickets to me here in the US and they'll book it all on one ticket so my luggage should get checked through.

Any other suggestions anyone?

Thanks to everyone so far!

In case it's helpful to someone else in the future, here's what I ended up doing:

I booked the flight from Siem Reap to Yangon (via Bangkok) on Bangkok Air on vayama.com. The total price including the delivery fee for the paper ticket is $372. I got the notice that they shipped the ticket via Fedex today so I should get it in the next day or two.

I tried calling Bangkok Air in the US in order to book with them directly. But they wanted $414 for the flights plus some additional fees with the total close to $450.

I attached the printed itineraries from vayama.com and Air Asia to my visa application. I Fedexed the visa application to the Myanmar Embassy in Washington DC this morning. I'll try to remember to post back here when I get my passport and visa back just so there will be one more data point that might help someone else in the future.

Thanks to everyone for the help so far!
