Private car will cost about 180,000 Kyats and take about 6-7 hrs.

Day buses are minibuses and not so comfortable. Leave about 6:00 am from Shwe Nyaung at get about 16:00.

Overnight buses are express A/C buses and leave about 19:00 from Shwe Nyaung and get to Mandalay early in the morning. About 10,000 Kyats/ person.

And-there have been reports here and on TT that parts of the route are very rough indeed.

Save up and fly.

We did the journey as part of our group tour on a coach. Including rest stops it took 9 hours. I didn't think it was so bad. It was quite bumpy early on where they are building the road - according to our guide this is a permanent state of affairs as their work is ruined by the monsoon every year.

We saw some interesting stuff on the way though, including bullock cart racing and teak wood logging.

The early part of the journey had some lovely scenery, but it became more flat scrubby and less interesting nearer to Mandalay.
