Irrawaddy River boat service Mandalay to Bagan

I could be flying in to Mandalay from Bangkok, on AirAsia, and then want to go to Bagan via the river. However I don't want a luxury cruise, just a regular passenger service.

How long does this take nowadays and is it safe?

I presume there are crocs in the Irrewaddy, and I wouldn't want the boat to sink.

The great site seat61.com says a riverboat is available but this may be out of date.

Never seen a croc, only river dolphins up near Bhamo.

When are you travelling? There are a couple on daily fast boats depending on season.

Iwill be travelling late October or early November. This is rainy season, yes? So river should be high.
