Cheduba Island (Munaung)

Hi all,

I'm staying in Yangon at the moment with friends and am interested in travelling to Cheduba Island.

I don't even know if it's possible although i read a report of a trip but some surfers in a magazine about ten years ago. They got a boat from Tongup to Manaung but I have no idea if the same boat is still running or what the alternatives would be.

A travel agent specialising in the region would be very useful. Or any help/advice at all really.

Cheers.

Hi Alastair, this link may help in terms of general information on the island:

myanmarburma.com/en/…

'To get there, you’ll need to get a boat from Tha Yet Cho on the mainland. It’s not a long trip and it should be easy enough to arrange transport on the day you arrive. Manaung Island is definitely a long way from the tourist track, and one its real appeals is having the whole place to yourself.'

Great link.. Thanks mate! Somehow I didn't find that when i was searching the net before posting here.

In the end I was told that the island is out of bounds for tourists. Is this just something they say and can be circumvented or do you think it's a genuine restriction?

It's such a tricky one, I know that since the article in Surfers Journal in 2001, Cheduba has been in a lot of surfers list of places they want to surf but in truth the government do make it difficult. But I think it could be something you could possibly get around, I wouldn't rule it out, it depends how determined you are and if you can be bothered with the potential hassle. The north end of Chaungtha beach is decent though and you can definitely get there.

Munaung Airport could be an isolated destination for the Malaysian airliner if it has been hijacked. Just a wild idea, but possible.
