Link to Myanmar Ministry of Hotels and Tourism's Website

Numerous posts ask for suggestions for Myanmar travel agents.

The Yangon US embassy just sent this message which may be helpful to you:

Myanmar Ministry of Hotels and Tourism’s Website

---------------------------------------------------------------------

The Consular Section often gets requests from U.S. citizens coming to Burma for recommendations for tour operators, hotels, or simply for the best tourist attractions. A good source of tourist information is the Myanmar Ministry of Hotels and Tourism’s official website, http://www.myanmartourism.org/index.html. The website has useful information such as lists of licensed tour companies and guides, hotel directories, dos and don’ts for visitors, areas in the country that are restricted, a calendar of festivities, maps and more.

I should mention that the tour company that we are using (River Mekong) is not on the list of tour companies provided on the Myanmar Ministry of Hotels and Tourism’s website. Neither is SST which is another highly regarded ecotourism tour company in Myanmar. I asked River Mekong about this and they responded "UMTA (Union of Myanmar Travel Association) is a Private Sector Organization for travel agencies in Myanmar. We are not a member of UMTA because the activities and member benefits of UMTA are still not very attractive to us." So, be aware that the Myanmar Ministry of Hotels and Tourism's website is not a comprehensive listing. Some tour companies recommended on this board (e.g., River Mekong) are not included.

We did our "due diligence" and asked for references from others who have used them, and called/emailed them to find out about their experiences. So far, River Mekong has been extremely responsive and we are looking forward to our trip. By the way, they have expanded the information on their website regarding ecotours (http://www.travelmyanmarasia.com/index.php/21-travel-myanmar-asia/60-river-mekong-travels-tours-co-ltd ). Will of course report back when we return.

I received additional information from River Mekong in response to my queries: "The website was build during the time of former Minister U Tint San with the help of UMTA and other private sectors' information and since then it was not updated except for the latest news page. When you go to the services link from the home page, you will see that the tour operator listings is as the lists of UMTA members. There are now more than 2,000 Travel companies in Myanmar and so the list is too short for the reality."
