5-Days Myanmar itinerary

Hello everyone!

Heading Myanmar for New Year, will have just 5 full days, but want to cover a lot. Here is the plan, please advise on my concerns:

Arriving Yangon Friday 27th at 7 pm.

Saturday : Yangon (is one day enough?)

Saturday night: Yangon-Mandalay sleeping train. (Yes, we want to get this kind of experience), or should we take day train on Sunday Morning to enjoy the scenery during the travel?

Sunday (full day if night train taken or just evening), Monday full day - Mandalay.

Tuesday 31 - morning flight: Mandalay - Inle lake

Wednesday - Inle lake.

Wednesday night - train to Yangon/ flight. Is there any sleeping trains between this two?

Thursday - departure from Yangon.

Or I was thinking about the other way around:

Yangon-Inle by plane,

Inle -Mandalay (train/plane)

Mandalay-Yangon by train.

I also would like to see Bagan, do you think we can squeeze it in?

Any feedback is much appreciated

Is someone going to Myanmar same days, we can go altogether, there are two of us ;)

I ve checked Air KBZ, on the website fare is about 178 USD. "Departure => 10:20 AM ----- Arrival => 10:55 AM, Fare is maximum 58 USD/pax. Depend on flight CO; and class."

Has anyone done booking online? I tried, but "one way" option is not available and they don't send any conformation.

Can we buy tickets on the day itself or is it risky?

Thank you!

Sleeper train from Yangon to Mandalay...

We just returned from Myanmar and travelled in a sleeper car on the overnight train from Yangon to Thazi (12 hours and a couple of stops before Mandalay!) and then back to Yangon a week later. Here are a few tips/comments:

1. Foreigners buy tickets at the west end of the south side of the railway station, on Bogyoke Aung San Road. NB This is not the main station entrance and ticket office.

2. Payment is in US dollars only.

3. Our train left at 1500, it was light enough to see until about 1800 and the scenery was interesting - paddy fields, temples - but not varied, so taking and earlier train would give you more of the same we think.

4. The train ride can only be described as violent!! We were literally bouncing up off our seats/beds. It was bad going north, but quite frightening coming south! I think the train was running a bit late and trying to make up time and there were times when we really thought we were about to come off the tracks! We seriously considered getting off at one stage - and we LOVE trains and have done some pretty hair raising trips without ever baling out

5.The restaurant staff will come and take your order for a meal - be sure to clarify prices with them. We had a wonderful meal - rather difficult to eat when the train is like a bucking bronco - but the bill was expensive by Myanmar standards. This was the only time anyone even tried to overcharge us in Myanmar and given what the railway workers earn we really don't blame them for taking advantage of our carte blanche ordering!!

6. If you decide to get off anywhere other than the terminal station set an alarm clock and be ready to jump. The train stops for about 3 minutes at most stations and it was already setting off by the time we fought our way off and leapt out with our bags at Thazi!!

Inle Lake

We got off in Thazi so that we could catch the local train the next day to Schwenyaung (10 hours) the nearest station to Inle Lake. That was a very pretty ride and much less scary! Nyaungshwe the large town at the head of Inle Lake is noisy and touristy but hire a bike and in 10 minutes you are back in unspoilt Myanmar and the lake is beautiful.
