Perfectly safe, probably the safest country in SE Asia & one of the safest countries on the planet for tourists. Plenty of people travel here with families & children under the age of 16 & have a great time. It'll be an amazing experience for her, you only have one problem, one week will not be long enough:-)
Here's a recent post on how to obtain your visa in Bangkok:
How far is Rangoon to Madalay? Can we go by bus?
Yes ., you can travel by bus . It take about 14 hrs. The bus leave from Yangon around 4 pm and reach Mandaly around 6 am. The distance , 460 miles.
I think only the young & hardy tourists travel long distances by bus.
All of the main up country tourist areas are connected to Yangon (and themselves) by a generally efficient air transport system.
However, August is seen as low season with a restricted schedule and I personally would prefer not to fly in the monsoon.
I would also agree with the comments on safety by Bon Z. It is the safest country for tourists in SE Asia
I would have no hesitation in taking children on holiday to Myanmar
The Yangon-Mandalay bus route is probably the best in the country thanks to the new highway that was built a while back now, it's taken a good few hours off the journey.
There's plenty of agents selling tickets on the south side of Aung San Stadium(opposite Yangon train st) The prices vary from between 10-15000k. They leave from 4-7pm on the hour, they may even run later than this? The buses depart from Aung Mingalar Bus Terminal which is 40mins drive from downtown.
Very safe country - i am middle aged woman I travelled alone. Only problem I had - was going down from mandalay Hill without flash light - so either take a taxi or have a flashlight :)
Local flights are cheap, I wouldn't travel 14 hours by bus. Roads are narrow, and they drive slowly, also cars are old so you will see black fumes comming out from the car in front of you. You don't want to breath that air for 14 hours.
Is it possible to obtain a visa with out a tour company?
Visa-certainly,most visitors do their own thing.
