sim card update

I was in Yangon yesterday and it was impossible to buy a sim card. Tried at the airport, several

Market stalls in central yangon and a shopping mall. Luckily a local travel agent let me borrow his spare one. Maybe it is still possible to get one for a year but doubt that helps most tourists!

Hand / cell / mobile phones from other countries do not work in Myanmar but email does at wifi hotspots in hotels etc. you can rent a CDMA mobile phone in Yangon airport; rental fee us$3 per day. You can also rent prepaid top up cards from us$20-50. International Phone calls cost us$ 0.90 perimeter. Incoming calls are free.

We were offered SIM card rental on October 23 for $US10 a day, minimum 5 days. We declined. According to the English language press, SIM cards will be available for sale to visitors during the SEA Games later this year. Our guides were very good about making the few local calls we needed on our behalf.

Was on Myanmar last week (nov 2013) and my China and Australian mobiles worked.

Previous trips we rented phones at the airport. These work but the phone are shocking.

You cannot send SMS fm Myanmar but emails work with WiFi.

Able to receive and make calls.

The service is still patchy but improving slowly.
