Sim cards - Arriving in Incheon Airport

Hi all,

Just perusing this link to look at sim card options. We arrive this Saturday morning before flying off to Taipei on Wed morning. So this 5 day unlimited sim thing mentioned sounded good. The only thing - will voice and sms be of use in calling up places? Given I assume they don't speak English anyway?

Most of our use would be internet so we can whatsapp home, and most importantly use google maps around Seoul and google things to do on the run. ABit of late planning this trip so we would appreciate internet to catch up on planning while we're there (we usually have everything pre planned). We're staying around Myeongdong (skypark 3 hotel) - but I think having internet at the airport would be better. We are mindful of how they can activate everything (if in Korean) as they are more English friendly than trying to buy it in the heart of Seoul.

I am a little confused, but it appears the sim card brands are KT, LG + U, SK and??? Which ones have people used? Just wanted tsomething reliable with decent data. For 4-5 days I am sure 2gb would be more than enough, but yeah the 'unlimited' sim card mentioned above seems pretty nifty. Just not sure what brand it is with, abit confused.

Also these gate 6 and 10 where they say the pickup is, they seem like they'll be open given our 8am+ arrival time into INcheon on Saturday, but how far/hard are they to get to from baggage collection? I am assuming this is before you even get your baggage , or are these gates for pickup of prepaid sims post-baggage collection and clearing customs etc?

Would appreciate any advice/help given we left things abit late this time around.

If there are more than one of you, you should instead get a WiFi Egg (portable device). Same price as a SIM card at 5,000 per day but you can share it and save money.

SK and KT are the #1 and #2 mobile phone operators. LG is #3 and just ok, but I actually think a bit more expensive. You can pre-reserve a device online if you like. SK and KT will have the same prices and the best service.

roaming.kt.com/rental/kor/main.asp?channel=

They will be open. I have seen them there as early as 6 AM when I have arrived. They speak English, Chinese, Japanese and Korean, of course.

This is in the arrivals level after you come out of baggage claim and have cleared customs. When you come out of baggage claim, you will see the doors in front of you to go outside that are numbered. Go to whichever one is closer.

Would appreciate a recommendation if choosing between say that EG sim card (Airport Railroad counter - if I'm on the right track) versus that booth on 1st floor gates 10 or 6 which appear to be SK or KT sim??

Unless someone has a good comparison website or image that perhaps lists data versus price and features for one telecom over the other? Coverage and having internet up and running mostly would be the main priority as im sure most 3g or LTE speeds would cover the sort of 'research' we'd be doing on the go ad hoc anyway.

Thank you.

Hi @mhollifield - thanks for your advice!

I have never been a fan of eggs/portable wifi devices. Mainly because I always felt it was easier to keep your mobile phone recharged than worrying about the portable wifi device. That and your mobile phone is always on you, and you may separate from one another... personally I think I'd prefer having a sim card just stuck in the device and operating, but I can see why some might prefer the other.

Great to hear about SK and KT being #1! I am abit confused though, this online website is showing pictures of picking up from gate #10 or #6 after the arrivals/baggage/customs area as you directed:

funtastickorea.com/p/…none

But in their Gimpo pickup their is 'olleh roaming' by KT? and also the website selling it is funtastickorea?

I am confused - does this work like western society where the KT network is resold by a reseller i.e. olleh roaming or fantastic? But the underlying network is KT? So we should still get the same good network coverage and data etc?? Albeit we are going through a 3rd company intermediary who resells and sets it up for us??

Should we prebook through this fantastic website ? It says to do so two days before hand, and I can still buy for this Saturday - the 14th, however we arrive 8am there so am uncertain if 'prebuying' means it would be ready first thing in the AM?

Further down on this blog post they talk about 'renting' a KT sim? Why is option 1 to buy the sim for $5,000 KRW a day, yet on this further option you need to 'rent' a sim and put deposits down? Is it because the first option is just a data only sim so the rules and regulations don't require you to rent/deposit down for a sim card? Whereas the latter has voice calls and sms activated?

They also mention EG mobile... I assume I should just stick to KT and order through the above link? Is it a reputable reseller - funtastickorea?

thank you!

Do not use EG Mobile. Go directly to the source KT, Use their website and book directly. I've never heard of Funtastick Korea. Googled it and it is a tour services company.

http://roaming.kt.com

The Prepaid SIM includes the option to have voice and texting (paid when you leave). The Data SIM is only data.

Use the website addresses I mentioned above to make reservation and read details on rates and fees. The Roaming.KT.com site is completely direct.

Don't worry too much about it. Just select what you need and then when you get there you will get it. At Incheon airport, they have two counters. One at Door 6 and Door 10. Doesn't matter which one you go to.

Are you even going to Gimpo airport?

If you need data only, check Neokosim too.

http://neokosim.com/

It has unlimited plan for 5 days (25$) and, what's more important, the price is reduced if you make an order before Feb 28 (22.5$).The sim isn't returnable, that's pros

It also offers voice calls+unlimited data , but in that case you have to return the simcard

Hello, I am looking at KT mobile as you suggested. For the 27,500 won, 5 day plan it says data rates is unrestricted. Does this mean it's unlimited? Would I be provided a temporary Korean cell number when I purchase the SIM card? Just to make sure, I am buying the SIM card, not renting it.

I am also having trouble find pick up information on the website. I see from other travel blogs that they have kiosks in many places upon arrival on 1F. Can I purchase the SIM now and pick it up there with my passport? I am leaving in less than 48 hours so being able to buy online now and pick it up when I arrive would be best.

thank you!

You do not buy it now, you simply reserve it online now. You pay for it at the airport at the counter when they activate it. It is unlimited, yes, but they might lower data speeds after a certain amount is used (it is usually a really high number, they are generous). It would say somewhere on the website or you can ask if you pick it up. I wouldn't worry about that as you probably can't use that much data anyway.

There are several desks at the airport, yes. When you come out of the baggage claim you will see the exit doors are numbered. Just go to whichever KT counter is closest. They can all help you.

I just came back from Seoul and I was very happy with the KT SIM card for 5 days. I was looking at a wifi egg that would cost about 50,000 but a sim costs 27,500. It also has unlimited data. There are two options: one is data only which does not include any calls and you do not need to return it. The other option is unlimited data with calls, same price but the calls are charged separately. Calls you receive do not incur charges but calls or txt msg you make do. When I asked of the difference between an egg and sim the lady said an egg would be if you have multiple travellers it is easier to share the data. I was happy with the sim only with calls option and giving my travel buddy hotspot when needed. Just needed to spend a few minutes returning the sim at the airport.

So strange that they make you return a prepaid sim card if you opt for the voice+sms option as well. Does anyone know what happens if you don't return the SIM card? That airport gets crazy and the last thing I'd want to do is spend time returning a SIM card before my flight.
