8 hours in Seoul. What would you do?

We are a couple who like to see the funnier side of life. Random, odd and off the beaten track must sees are an ideal. We're arriving by ship mid sept and will have approx 9-5pm free mid sept.

So if you only had one day to do Seoul. And wanted to see either the best or the alternative sides to the city. What can you recommend?

We really appreciate any help anyone is able to offer.

Many thanks.

where exactly do you arrive? Is it Incheon port?

If so you need to allow 90 mins each way to get into Seoul itself, I think.

Yes it is Incheon, thanks for the heads up!

So any recommendations would have to take this into account.

Cheers

Hi

Have a look at this site re Transit Tours from the Airport.

http://www.freedomtour.co.kr/

Click on Tours/Transit Tours

--you choose according to duration (hours) and destination(s)

You go to Transit Tour Desk which is on 2nd floor, same floor as you arrive at. Because of time limitations, maybe you should consider this. - then you know you will be back at desired time.

Hello DCtheKiwi, the OP specified that they will arrive at the "seaport"... not airport.

Hi Acedog, your post did not go to waste. Because of you I learned this service available at Incheon International Airport. Thanks!

Hmm. I have reread your post….

I assume you must be arriving at the Ferry/Cruise Terminal at INCHEON on the mainland (not the same location as Incheon International Airport Island).

Incheon itself has a population of 2.5 million so you might be able to occupy yourself locally. Places of interest and walking tours etc.

This place is notable because General MacArthur and UN forces landed here in the 1950s to have a crack at the North Koreans and ultimately turn the tide in favour of the south.

There are two tours you can pick up here. The City Tour takes 4 hours and the Airport Island Tour, about 3 hours. These depart from the main TOURIST INFORMATION CENTRE is outside the Incheon SUBWAY STATION

OR go into Seoul by SUBWAY.

Grab a map from the TOURIST INFORMATION CENTRE that includes the subway system. You get to the centre of Seoul on Line 1, without having to change.

Suggest you consider Gyeongbokgung Palace (this complex includes National Palace Museum and the National Folk Museum) and then Insadong. For this, get off at Station No 130, Jongno 3, walk back 2 blocks to Tagpol Park ,(you will be walking parallel to Cheonggyecheon Stream)

Turn R after 2 blocks, take L fork and you are at Insadong – an interesting area - galleries, teashops, restaurants, handicrafts etc. Walk through this to the end, turn left and proceed to the Palace complex. With any luck, you will experience colourful cultural performance, such as ceremony of the Gate Guard Change.

After this, you may have time to whizz up Namsam Mountain and Seoul Tower (by cablecar or taxi).

If you do all of this, you will have seen some of the new and some of the traditional and gained some understanding of South Korea.

Hope that helps.
