Your best option is an early morning flight from Aswan. A shuttle bus will take you from the Abu Simbel airport to the temples & back.

Is it a half day affair - both rturn flight and sightseeing or should one assume a whole day affair?

The flight is the best option and the most expensive one. The whole tour takes 4 to 5 hours. The 2nd option to go by road but in a private air conditioned car, the whole tour takes 8 hours.

I am advised that the road trip starts at 4am? Is that your experience? Why do they travel that early in Jan? Is there much to see on route by car from Aswan to Abu S and return to make it worthwhile?

There is absolutely nothing to see en route apart from sand. Well, you can also get some good mirages which are quite interesting for a few minutes. They start early in the morning because the heat at mid-day is blistering, so you wouldn't want to be wandering around the temples at that time. Most of the interest of Abu Simbel is the outside; inside the temples is fairly bland compared to the VotK tombs.

Hi,

A few pics which may give you some idea:

Abu Simbel (Temples of King Ramses & Queen Nefertari)

Aswan

No photos are allowed inside the temples but if you google for them you will find a few.

There are 2 convoys to Abu Simbel, one at 4a.m and the other one at 11a.m. I always advise the 4a.m in summer to avoid the hot weather (your visit will be from 7 to 9a.m). You can do the 11a.m convoy in winter if you want to avoid the cold weather early morning. There are nothing on the way, just you will see the beauty of the desert during the sunrise.

Friends,

Most helpful advise. I am going in Jan 10 so its winter. The round trip by car is effectively an 7-8 hour trip ... best part of a day.

Thanks.

I have flew from Aswan to Abu Simbel. Flights are available via www.egyptair.com. Sometimes putting egypt as your home country works out cheaper. Flight takes around 50mins. Egyptair lay on free transport from AS airport to the temples and return you for your return flight. If you do fly sit on the left of the plane for great aerial views of the two temples.

Very helpful advice. Thanks

Am thinking of flying direct from Cairo to Abu S in the morning and then fly to Aswan that afternoon. Anyone done the trip this way? Or is it better to travel from Aswan?
