Ten days in Egypt with 3 kids aged 4.9 and 12...where to go?

Hi,

We are looking at travelling with our kids to Egpyt as part of a one month trip to Egypt, Jordan and Turkey.

We are thinking 10 days in Egypt. We would love to stay longer but ...no more time is available.

We are a pretty adventurous family and although we'd love to have access to a pool, 3 star places to stay (or less if we have to) are fine.

We like to travel independently....should we join tours when we are there? Is Egypt really expensive?

Also, can we travel from Egypt to Aquaba in Jordan or is this too dangerous? Also...does it take a lot of time?

Sorry about the many questions.....I've got the guide books here, but some questions are hard to find answers for.

Thank you so much for your help!

Define "pretty adventurous" and with a 4 year old in tow do you really want to be dragging them round temples or would they rather be on the beach ?.

What do you want to see ?. What will your children tolerate in terms of sightseeing before they have had enough ?.

Egypt can be as cheap or as expensive as you want dependant upon where you stay, eat etc

If you want relaxation, sun and sand then head to the Red Sea resorts like Sharm or Hurghada, if you want history (albeit with good hotels with swimming pools) then head to cairo, Luxor, Aswan or all three on a short tour.

The more info you provide then the easier it is for people to advise you. I am sure people will be happy to help.

Hi and thanks for your feedback...by adventurous I mean we usually have the kids join us exploring with a 'trade-off' of a swim in the afternoon or a dvd or something similiar.

The kids have been to Cambodia, Laos and other SE Asian countries where we've travelled on a mid-range budget and done everything independently so they are used to this style of travel - simple, but adventurous with occasional splurges (like eating at a restaurant!...we usually enjoy the street food the best....my son has even tried a cricket!).

Thanks again for your help and advice!

Well if you go to Luxor/Cairo/Aswan or all three then you can certainly explore in the mornings before it gets too hot and then go back to the hotel and chill by the pool.

If the pyramids are a must then obviously Cairo is the place to go but for ancient temples, the valley of the KIngs, a rather good museum and arange of top quality hotels I would recommend Luxor which is like an exceptionally cool open air museum. The Red Sea resorts are fine but unless you are into diving or a more beach orientated holiday then they might not suit your family.

Thank you very much for your advice.

It sounds like Cairo and Luxor would be the main spots.

We are very spoilt to live 5 mins walk from a glorious beach where we live so the beach things can wait for our Summer holidays back here.

Thanks again for your advice.
